Announcing a new Meetup for MIT/Stanford Venture Lab (VLAB)!

What: VLAB Planning Meeting Tonight! Oct 5, 2010

When: Tuesday, October 5,[masked]:00 PM

Where: Wilson Sonsini Goodrich & Rosati
650 Page Mill Road
Palo Alto, CA 94304

Come join us at our Pitch Meeting today (Tues Oct 5th) and share your ideas and panelist suggestions for our upcoming events. And please invite anyone who you think might be able to contribute to our community. Events to be discussed are (chairs and co-chairs are listed in parentheses, event descriptions in italics):

REVIEW: Sep: mHealth (Richard Garris, Abhay Pimprikar)

Oct: H2O (Liz Crowell)

In many areas of the world, the demand for clean water far exceeds the reliable supply. To make matters worse, water is often priced far below market rates, especially for the largest users. This supply-demand disparity along with high related energy requirements creates opportunities for innovators to reduce the economic and environmental costs of providing clean water. California?s water infrastructure uses almost 8% of the state?s electricity. Right now, the status quo needs disruption. We will showcase entrepreneurs making a difference in this global challenge.

Nov: Education (Jay Johnson)

Multiple technologies have liberated the classroom. Nearly instantaneous virtual communities coalescing around ideas, social networking, and more formal study groups is opening multiple portals for students of all ages, geographies, ethnicities, and economic strata. Whether you are an aspiring student in Timbuktu or East Timor, one has nearly equal access to great minds. Old monopolies will crumble like aging textbooks as free virtual textbooks, remote learning, and flexible classes challenge the best "legacy" schools in the world. Many titans of business are backing novel and cutting edge technological avenues to education. So too are many venture capitalists.

Upcoming Events

Following our "ideas marketplace" model, the following topics have generated the most outreach from many of you. If you are interested in bringing one of these events to life, please join forces with a past event chair/co-chair and we can discuss getting at least one of these events calendared:

Advertising: What are new models, technologies and market forces currently at work in advertising?
Vision Computing: The field of analyzing pictures/videos (ie pixels) and applying that to a whole bunch of applications including facial and emotional recognition and more.
Predictive Analytics: Google recently opened up their Google Prediction API -- what disruptions are happening in the space?

Have an idea or a company to include for any of these events? Interested in joining one of the planning teams? Have any feedback to make these events even better? Would love to hear from you at the meeting -- which will be held at:

Time: 7:00 P.M. - 8:30 P.M.
Date: Tuesday, Oct 5th

LOCATION: Wilson Sonsini Goodrich & Rosati
650 Page Mill Road
Palo Alto, California[masked]

Open to everyone, lots of pizza -- please forward to folks who have a passion for technology and entrepreneurship!

One final note: If your event team would like to meet at Wilson Sonsini we have room 1D available from 6P to 7P tomorrow.
