This is one of the nicer paddles you can do in the Victoria area. We leave from Whiffin Spit at 10:00, so make sure you get there early enough to get ready. Because it is exposed to some swell from the pacific, you need to have some experience in waves, and some bracing skills. If you are not sure you have the skills please contact me and we can discuss it. We will stop at Cabin Point for lunch. Make sure you are prepared for changing conditions with warm clothing.
Reset Your Mood To A Well Deserved Feeling Of Inner Peace And Relaxation. You may have kayaked this area before. Maybe you experienced the wild feeling you get when you reach the other side of the islands. And enjoyed exploring it’s rugged coastline. The relaxing and mood changing sense of being out in the wilderness. In less than 15 minutes of paddling you can expect to observe wildlife. Seals, eagles, and maybe the occasional sea lion. And perhaps even experience the resident wolf howling at you. All from the comfort and safety of your kayak. see pictures... (https://www.meetup.com/Victoria-Sea-Kayakers/photos/26991815/) Because we will be crossing the notorious Bayne's Channel you must be able to brace. If you are not sure you are ready for the conditions please contact me. Please arrive a bit early so we can be on the water ready to go by the above time.
Would anyone like to suggest a kayak trip of 5 to 8 days duration on either coast of Vancouver Island for next year? The organizers will collate the ideas and consider organizing 1 to 3 trips around your ideas, provided there is enough interest. Each trip will be aimed at intermediate level paddlers who are comfortable with exposed crossings, have strong self-rescue skills and are familiar with assisted rescues, have suitable camping gear and clothing, and are prepared to commit to "the group effort" and have a lot of fun. Just add your ideas to this discussion thread, below.
Anybody interested in getting together in August in the afternoon or early evening to practise our wet exits are re-entries. Maybe start out on the Gorge one night and then move out to the ocean another night.
