VCWG: Meet and Greet ONLINE

Link visible for attendees

This is a free-form, talk-about-anything evening to meet fellow Victoria BC writers. You can discuss anything writing-related, form critique groups with similar writers, or just discuss what shape your passion for words takes. It's a relaxing evening spent in the company of fellow wordsmiths!

Due to COVID19 restrictions, it will be an online event using Microsoft Teams. For ease of access, we recommend downloading MICROSOFT TEAMS APP for your device. Mobile, web-based or desktop versions will all work:

Mobile:
https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/microsoft-365/microsoft-teams/download-app

Web Login:
https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/microsoft-teams/log-in

**PLEASE ENSURE YOUR SCREEN NAME MATCHES YOUR MEETUP NAME!

OTHERWISE WE MAY DECLINE TO ALLOW YOU ACCESS TO PREVENT UNAUTHORIZED DISRUPTIONS BY NON-VCWG RANDOMS.

You WILL need a microphone. You DO NOT need a camera (although we would love to see your smiling faces!).

At the allotted time, click on the link to join the call through the app. You can be a guest, or use your Microsoft logon to join in!

*** If you set an RSVP, please be SURE to ATTEND the meeting! ***

NOTE: We reserve the right to cancel RSVP's of members who have two or more 'No Show' flags for previous events, to make room for waitlisted members without such flags. This is important to ensure a place for all who want to attend our events.

Please follow these basic meeting guidelines:

  • people will be Muted by default when joining to cut down on accidental noise and feedback.

  • if you want to speak, please use the 'Raise your hand' icon at the top of the MS Teams window, OR physically raise your hand in your video OR type a note in the chat window, which VCWG management will monitor.

  • You will have to un-Mute yourself (admins do not have that ability)

  • if you have a slow connection, consider turning off your own video

  • if the number of video connections proves to be a problem for everyone, then we will likely ask people to turn off their video to help stabilize the experience for the whole group

IF the Teams link FAILS, please check back on this Meetup website (or the VWCG Facebook group) for an updated link in the meeting Comments. We may have to try different host devices if we get too many people with unstable connections.

We hope these guidelines will allow everyone to have a say while encouraging the group to listen to each speaker in turn. As video chatting is still new to many people, we'll work on improving the experience as we go.

Check back here before the Meetup date for details as they become available! We hope to 'see' lots of writers looking for support and inspiration for the coming year!

VCWG: Prep for NaNoWriMo ONLINE

Link visible for attendees

Suitable for existing and new members.

Presented by Peter Ehm

Appropriate for those new to the National November Writing Month, or those who are looking for help getting ready!

What is NaNoWriMo? It's a challenge! For free, participate in a huge online push to write an entire novel (or at least 50,000 words) in ONE MONTH! Yes, you read that right!

Those who have never participated in NaNoWriMo before, it can be daunting! Why not go into the month-long writing marathon with a clear idea of the finish line? With this 10-step presentation (with electronic handouts!) you can be certain that you have ALL you'll need to start writing your novel from the word go. Characters, setting, plot... it will all be at your fingertips as you sit down for the month of November 2020 to write your next novel!

And even if you're not in for the 'classic' version, learn more about NaNoWriMo and use the resources to kick-start your own projects!

Online platform: Microsoft Teams.

You do not need a Microsoft login, as the link can take you straight to participating as a guest. Guests cannot use chat feature.

Please remember to stay muted when you are in unless speaking to avoid too much background noise and feedback. But we encourage participation! "Raise your hand" within the program, or on screen, to take a turn speaking.

If you struggle to logon, check back at this location where we will be updating as quickly as we can. The link SHOULD be the same (but will be updated the day of if necessary).

VCWG: Show and Tell ONLINE

Needs a location

*Suitable for existing members.

Present a piece of your writing (about 500-ish words) and read it to the group. Sounds simple, right? But a little scary? That's okay, we all feel that way, even seasoned professionals (or so I'm told). The purpose is not to show off or to judge others harshly but to get comfortable with sharing your work. If you'd like, you may request feedback from the group as well, a key step in improving your craft!

So bring in a piece of your current project (or better yet write something new), read it to the group, and let's see what happens.

People are welcome to attend and observe or provide feedback without sharing to start!

**PLEASE ENSURE YOUR SCREEN NAME MATCHES YOUR MEETUP NAME!

For ease of access, we recommend downloading MICROSOFT TEAMS APP for your device. Phone or desktop version will work! (it's been finicky recently doing the direct browser version...)

You WILL need a microphone. You DO NOT need a camera (although we would love to see your smiling faces!).

At the allotted time, click on the link to join the call through the app. You can be a guest, or use your microsoft logon to join in!
