Building Closed Captions Support for The New York Times Videos

Said Ketchman & Flavio Ribeiro, The New York Times

Accessibility requirements, and the growing acceptance of muted autoplay video across media and social networks, have made closed captions video support a focus for The New York Times. Our talk today will focus on the approach we are taking to add closed captions generation to our video encoding and publishing flow. Along with this technical challenge, we'll also talk about the challenge of prioritizing playback support across native, mobile web, and desktop platforms.

The Elusive Video Metric

Donato Borrello & Sahil Shah, JW Player

Most content creators and publishers are limited to metrics around number of "plays" and "likes" - however these are actually poor indicators of that elusive videometric: quality. At JW, we are tackling the problem of using viewer behavior to identify truly stand-out content. We will demo our Content Score Lab, explain the data behind it, and show how technology can enable data-driven decisions.
