Backpacking the Laurel Highlands Trail (70 miles) in Pennsylvania

Details

• What we'll do
This will be a six day, five night backpacking trip on a 70 mile point to point route, plus a travel day, in SW Pennsylvania. It is not for beginners. I need to make reservations for camping each night and for transportation to the trail head. You owe yourself a long trip or two each year - here's your chance for one in the spring on a classic ridgeline hike. Designated trail camping includes shelters and tent sites, privies, water (bring treatment), and firewood. We will car pool (5 hours or so) up to Ohioplye on May 16 and either camp in the area or stay in a hotel. That will be up to each carpool group, based on work schedules, etc. for the day. We will all need to come together early morning of May 17 for the shuttle to the northern terminus of the trail. After five full days on the trail, we will get back to our cars on the sixth day (seventh day since leaving Richmond) on the trail, change into fresh clothes, get lunch, and head for RVA.

• What to bring
Backpacking supplies, food, and equipment for six days on the trail in spring weather. Tents will not be needed if you prefer to stay in a shelter. Get me your preference and I will try to make reservations accordingly. I think that shelters hold 3-4 in comfort but will have to confirm with PA State Parks when I reserve.

• Important to know
Once Brian determines Triple Crown members who want to attend, we will open this up to the group, starting with the Wait List. I will take at least 10, and possibly 12 if there is sufficient interest. I've prepared a fact sheet that Brian will make available. There will be costs (approximately $45 - $60 per person) that I will have to pay up front, and I will need reimbursement in advance at reservation time in early January. We will be hiking up to 14 miles a day.
