Research Study Details
Subject: Participants Needed for Research Study (IRB Study#: STUDY000108) (earn a 10 dollar gift card!)
Have you ever wondered about how your future self would look like? To see your own future self, how about time travel to your future? Hello, my name is Andy! I am researching the uses of the VR technologies in health and marketing communications. And I’d like to introduce my research project that enables you “virtually” to travel to your future! The purpose of this study (approved by University of South Florida) is to understand to what extent the experiences in the virtual reality (VR) can influence users’ perceptions of and attitude toward their futures.
You meet the criteria for the participation selection (any adult) so that you are invited to participate in a research study to be conducted in the meet-up in VR.
In return to your participation in this study, you will receive a 10 dollar gift card of your choice. In this research study, if you agree to be in the study, you will participate in two session: 1) one is a short pre-experiment session which takes less than 5 minutes, 2) the other one is a main-experiment session which takes about 20 minutes.
First, in the short pre-experiment session, you will be asked to upload the photo of yourself. This photo will be manipulated by a software called FaceGen. In this manipulated photo, you will look older (i.e., your future self) than you actually are. This manipulated photo will be shown to you during the main-experiment question using the VR platform developed for this study. Upon request, you can own this photo if you want. We’re fully committed to protecting your photos. Thus, the photos will be seen only by the researcher (Andy), and will never be used for other purposes. After a week elapsed, you will receive a link to the main experiment.
Second, during the main experiment, you need to download the VR application (about 200 MB) to your computer. Then, you need to run the application to launch the VR platform developed for this study. In this immersive simulation, you will travel to your future. Within the VR, you will engage in some simple tasks, and then answer a batch of questions including the questions about your demographic and your attitudes toward the health messages. The entire experiment is expected to take no longer than 30 minutes. This study will be done entirely virtually in your home at your convenient time. The potential benefit of participating in this study is to contribute to the development of scientific knowledge about relationship between the immersive technologies and human perceptions of futures. If you would like to participate in this study, please email the researcher (Andy) at rrrbloch@gmail.com to schedule a time for the participation in our study.
Thank you! Y. Andy Jeon, Ph.D.
