How can HR, People & Culture leaders use Design Thinking to Innovate?

The world leading brands have been practicing the design thinking approach for product and service innovation for many years. The methodology is being taught at the most renowned universities in the world, such as Stanford (d.school), Harvard and MIT. Since the 80's, Stanford has been teaching "design thinking as a method of creative action." In the early 90's, David M. Kelley, who founded the design consultancy IDEO identified its application in business and streamlined the process.

When learned and applied correctly, design thinking can help business leaders stay competitive in today's increasingly volatile, uncertain, complex, and ambiguous world. Many companies already started applying the design thinking framework to redesign HR processes and strategy. It might sound like another trend, but most believe it's here to stay, and also to open doors to a whole world of new methodologies that HR can use in order to break through its outdated way of thinking.

What is design thinking?

Simply put, Design thinking is a creative approach to problem-solving, that places the human at the center of solutions. It is a way of thinking and working as well as a collection of hands-on methods. DT helps us challenge assumptions, and redefine problems in an attempt to identify alternative strategies and solutions that might not be instantly apparent with our initial level of understanding.

In HR, that means to put employees at the center of the solution. While it still accounts for other factors - such as compliance, leadership, and strategy - the framework helps re-frame the problem in human-centric ways. It starts with a deep understanding of the people and ends with new solutions that are tailor-made to suit their needs.

This 2-hour meetup will cover:

  • Introduction to the Design Thinking framework
  • Practical examples of ways HR and People&Culture teams can apply DT
  • Group discussion
  • Design Thinking pocket guide
