Come and meet like-minded WordPress people outside, as we will have a relaxed outdoor picnic on July 4th! Bring some drinks and snacks (if you’d like to), and something to sit on and join us in Kaisaniemi Park. This time there is no special agenda, so you are free to share what is on your mind or just come and network. Also we are always open for ideas for the upcoming meetups. We will try to set camp somewhere in front of the tennis courts we will bring some logo prints so that you can recognise us. We will share a more detailed location once we find a spot for us. We’re probably going to stay there for a while, so don’t worry if you are a bit late. If the weather on Wednesday is not good, we will have the meetup in Vltava (next to the railway station) instead – we will send a message to everyone if that’s the case. • WordPress Meetup: GDPR 101
The WordPress Helsinki meetup group aims to bring people of all skill levels together, from beginners to WordPress professionals. WordPress Helsinki is purely organised by community volunteers, and operates under the WordPress code of conduct. GDPR (General Data Protection Regulation) is in effect. If you’d like to hear more about what it means, how to comply or what are the best practises for technical implementation of GDPR, we are happy to announce that the June meetup is for you. In the meetup Gennady Kurushin (@gkurushin) will share the key aspects of GDPR and Tiia Rantanen (@tirriainen) will be talking about GDPR for operations and development teams. Gennady describes his talk as follows: "The General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) is new EU legislation affecting any website or company storing data of EU citizens. The legislation takes effect on 25 May. Non-compliance with the new law might have serious financial consequences. During the Meetup we will discuss the key aspects of GDPR and how they might affect your website and business practices: what is GDPR and personal data, compliance checklist, understanding consent, WordPress and GDPR, helpful tips and tools." Tiia will be talking about GDPR for operations and development teams. GDPR includes the privacy by default and privacy by design principles that can be troublesome if not taken into consideration in the beginning of the secure software development life cycle. What are the technical requirements to be considered as "best practices" that are mentioned in the regulation. What are the methods of implementation to the risk-based approach the general data protection regulation has. Please note that WordPress Helsinki does not provide any legal advice, and this event is intended for informational purpose only. --- Agenda 17:15 – Doors open 17:30 – Opening words 17:40 – GDPR 101, Gennady Kurushin 18:30 – GDPR and Software Development, Tiia Rantanen / Zeeland Family 19:15 – Drinks & networking This session will be in English. • WordPress Meetup: GraphQL/Next.js and WordPress performance
The WordPress Helsinki meetup group aims to bring people of all skill levels together, from beginners to WordPress professionals. This month we have the pleasure of welcoming Jani Tarviainen (@velmu) and Johannes Siipola (@joppuyo) to come talk about GraphQL and Next.js, and how to get the most out of your WordPress site in terms of speed. --- Jani Tarviainen on GraphQL and Next.js: "Building decoupled sites with a RESTful API and a JavaScript framework like Angular has been feasible for some years already. The approach itself has some pros and cons, but most importantly it has required time spent on on boilerplate code. In addition projects easily end up difficult to maintain at scale, because of lack of common practises and tools lead to one-off implementations. So there is definitely room to improve in building decoupled sites. Through 2017 a few interesting related technologies have been gaining momentum; GraphQL and Next.js. These two separate technologies can be used to improve velocity of building API driven sites using React.js as a templating engine. This opens up an interesting pattern where component styling, data fetching and templating is all done in a single component. In this talk we will have a brief introduction to these GraphQL and Next.js, as well take a practical how to use them together with WordPress to build a simple demo site. Finally we'll discuss some of the pros and cons of this approach." --- Johannes Siipola on WordPress performance: "Nobody likes a slow website. Faster sites lead to happier users, and happier users lead to more conversions and revenue. That’s why you should take performance into account in your WordPress project. Learn what practical techniques and WordPress plugins to use in order to optimize your site for speed." --- As you can probably guess, this session is mainly aimed at developers, but you can join us for drinks later at Bier Bier (http://www.bier-bier.fi/) if you just want to talk and meet others from the community.
