What we're about

as much as the rules, and prudence, will allow.

This is a group for those interested in learning Argentine Tango at all levels including absolute beginners, and/or enjoying this wonderful dance at social events (Milongas). It is for those living or studying in the general area of Warwickshire and the West Midlands and for tango enthusiasts visiting the area who are looking for somewhere to dance. Most of the events, but not all, take place in Leamington Spa or Warwick both of which are fairly easily reachable via the A46 or M40 and connecting roads, or bus or train.

Argentine tango is a dance where the couples are usually in close contact, and where the convention is to change dance partners throughout the evening. Its essence is that it is a social dance. It will difficult to return to it in this form while any covid social distancing restrictions exist. However many groups, including Tango Warwick, will do as much as regulations, guidelines, and prudence allows. Socially distanced classes but with fixed partners, were quite popular before the present lockdown came, in October last year, and hopefully will start up again in late May. To do more we have to hope for the best, and above all keep to government guidelines and regulations so that we can restart properly as soon as possible.

Argentine Tango classes with guest teacher Dante Culcuy, + practica.

St Mary's Church

Tango Warwick has returned to its normal offering of classes and practica on Fridays. This gives an opportunity for single dancers and, from February, absolute beginners, to join us. These are classes in Argentine Tango as danced internationally from Buenos Aires to Beijing, via Lisbon, Berlin, Istanbul, Moscow, Hong Kong,..., and taught by genuine, and star, practitioners. It is not Ballroom Tango and is quite different from it!

For your and our safety we impose:
COVID SAFETY REQUIREMENTS: Dancers who come without a partner or who wish to change partners, as normal in non-covid times, or join the practica must be able to show they have completed their vaccination by the time of the class AND have had a negative lateral flow test in the 24 hours prior to the class (you can just bring the test strip for this). If you come with a partner and will not dance with anyone else during the evening, nor join the practica, you must have the equivalent of a current NHS covid pass : essentially vaccination OR test. You must also agree to sensitively respect other's wishes so far as social distancing and other covid precautions are concerned.
We are delighted to be able to welcome Dante Culcuy at St Mary's for the 3rd and final one of his current guest series on Friday 28th January. It will be independent of the previous Fridays. He will be assisted by Lilie Louise. Dante has been a good friend to Tango Warwick over the years and his brilliant teaching and dancing has made him much appreciated on previous visits. If you want to know more about his background etc see below for a brief pre-lockdown bio.

For these Fridays there will be two classes each evening. We will not be catering for new beginners until February-sorry!
At 7.15 pm there will be a class suitable for improvers level and above. This includes those who may had just started to come to Luis & Elizabeth's 7.15 class at St Mary's. It can also serve as a time for improving the all important basic techniques. At 8.30pm there will be the usual more advanced class restricted to more experienced dancers.

Newcomers and visiting tango dancers will be made very welcome; and afterwards there is a practice/ social dancing session with Juan de Scarfo returning as DJ and some wine, soft drinks, and cake, to round up an enjoyable and instructive evening.

The practica is after the third class but is open and free to those who have done any of the classes (and a nominal charge to others).

An Argentinean native, Dante started Argentine Tango in Jujuy, a province in the north of Argentina, where he also studied ballet with his teacher Fulvia Chagra de Gruber and Andrei Kozlov (ex principle dancer of the Kiev Opera), he moved to Buenos Aires to specialized more in Tango dancing. In 2008 he moved to England. He has also been invited to teach and perform in various countries around the world in Europe, Asia, America and Africa. Dante is the organiser of two very successful Tango Academies in the UK: The Northern Tango Academy and Oxford Tango Academy, bringing professional couples from Argentina all the year around, making it the school with more residents teachers in Europe. Dante has been teaching tango for over ten years and has become recognised for his unique and in-depth teaching methods. In 2015 he was finalist of the Tango World Championship in Buenos Aires, he has also been the UK Cultural Ambassador at the Guadalajara Book Fair in Mexico in 2016. He was also part of Tango Shows with Daniel Melingo, Carismatico and Aurora Orchestra among others
Our resident teachers, Elizabeth & Luis, return at the beginning of February. We expect to be able to welcome absolute beginners to a 6.30 class then.
On the first Fridays of the month, Tango Warwick holds milongas, ie social dancing events, and there will not be the usual classes.

Milonga "La Ideal" Candlemas edition

Warwick SPACE,

Tango Warwick is delighted to welcome Ewa Zbrzeska as guest DJ for this Candlemas edition of their popular monthly Milonga "La Ideal".

London based, originally from Poland, Ewa has been regularly DJing at major London milongas, and has played at various UK & European events. Many of you will already know her and love her choice of music.

We will be back home in the recently refurbished Warwick SPACE. It is a large room with a good floor, in a space reminiscent of Buenos Aires' Sunderland Club (some say), and with great acoustics.

Candlemas/ Imbolc celebrates the coming of light and the banishment of the dark days of winter; let's do that the way we love to do it! If you have been isolating with covid its a superb opportunity to join other healthy people in a great celebration of tango.
Tango Warwick's covid entry conditions (see below) will be strictly enforced, but otherwise it will be the friendly, joyful, welcoming and lively, milonga, tango dancers have come to love.

There will be some nibbles, soft drinks, fine cordials and wine for early arrivers, but BYOB if you wish.

We encourage good tango, nice ronda and cabeceo!

Above all there will be a warm welcome for visitors and once regulars alike.

Time: 8pm to midnight.
Place: Warwick SPACE, 71 Coten End, Warwick CV34 4NU.
Cost (at door) : £12 (£8 for students with student card).
COVID ENTRY CONDITIONS: To enter you must be able to demonstrate completed vaccination or NHS certified antibodies, AND that you have taken a negative lateral flow test on 4th February. An NHS pass is NOT enough!

Warwick SPACE is on the north side of the main road north of the river between Leamington and Warwick; next to the Black Pug pub, aka Millwright Arms, and almost opposite a Sainsbury local. It is a short walk from Warwick Railway Station, and not far from M40 and A46. There are several hotels & B&B's nearby in this tourist area. The Castle Limes Hotel is a few minutes away. The Jephson in Leamington is about 1.3 miles away, inexpensive, but generally found adequate. Some swear by its breakfast.
PARKING is mostly on road, especially towards Warwick on the main road or Smith Street (one way, going East), on back streets (not very easy), or towards Warwick station. The St Nicholas Park car park is about 10 minutes walk away but you probably could do with a torch on the way back.
