Introduction to Consensus Basics --On-Line Event via Zoom

Details

Is consensus decision-making a challenge for your community?

Are you unable to align on a decision?

Do members say, prior to any discussion, they will block a topic if you bring it up?

Are you just starting out on your cohousing path and want to tackle consensus?

Consensus decision-making or some form of collaborative decision-making, including Sociocracy (Dynamic Governance), is used by virtually every cohousing community in the U.S. (and maybe Canada!) Yet, for all its widespread adoption, it is one of the most contentious aspects of living in cohousing. Perhaps it is because it is often misunderstood and misused.

Collaborative decision-making is challenging!

In all of the above questions the answer almost always is: back to basics.

In this Introduction to Consensus Basics, the two-hour workshop will be led by Martie Weatherly of Liberty Village Cohousing, Frederick, Maryland.

Martie will cover these three areas:

4 Attributes to bring into the “Room Where It Happens …” (fr.Hamilton)

10 Steps for Liberty Village’s Pathway to Consensus.

5 Pitfalls of Consensus - five areas on which groups having difficulty stumble.

Lastly, there will be plenty of time for Q&A

Martie Weatherly has been a member of Liberty Village since 1995. She has studied and continues to study consensus and facilitation with Laird Schaub lairdsblog@ic.org

For Martie, one of the most important aspects about consensus is that at the end of the process, there is no dissatisfied minority but rather a decision that everyone can align on.

Martie is a co-founder of Mid Atlantic Cohousing. She serves on the Board as its Treasurer.
