  • MongoDB Adoption at Freddie Mac and an Introduction to MongoDB Atlas

Join MongoDB and Freddie Mac at our next Virginia User Group Meetup at the Freddie Mac Offices. We'll have MongoDB product experts and employees to share an overview of MongoDB and provide examples of all the great things you can do with MongoDB. Food and beverages will be provided and plan to leave with some great MongoDB swag! Agenda 6:00pm Networking and Welcome 6:30pm Presentations: Talk 1: Loan Advisor Suite MongoDB Adoption Freddie Mac Loan Advisor Suite (LAS) is our smart, end-to-end technology solution built to give our users greater certainty about the quality of your loans and provide an insight into the loans' purchase eligibility earlier in the loan production process. To increase business agility and reduce costs, LAS has adopted in some of its applications MongoDB Platform to improve efficiency and time to market. This talk will walk attendees through the transition of a heavily invested Relational DB’s enterprise company to a NoSQL Database platform, we will discuss some of the practices we have followed, and some lessons learned. Speaker: Alex Donate is a Freddie Mac Senior Tech Lead who is a key member of Single Family technical leadership group, architecting and leading the company in adaptation of the cutting edge technology into our mission critical systems. He leads the technology direction for the firm’s largest most visible product, with support from about 1,000 hands-on technical resources. Talk 2: First MongoDB Application with MongoDB Atlas During this presentation, we will take a deep dive into MongoDB Atlas, our fully managed database as a service offering. MongoDB Atlas delivers the world’s leading database for modern applications as a fully automated cloud service engineered and run by the same team that builds the database. Proven operational and security practices are built in, automating time-consuming administration tasks such as infrastructure provisioning, database setup, ensuring availability, global distribution, backups, and more. The easy-to-use UI and API let you spend more time building your applications and less time managing your database. Speaker: Ben Ogden is a full stack software developer with over 20 years experience designing and building distributed systems at scale. He joined MongoDB in 2016 as a Consulting Engineer, working hands on with customers to design and implement applications on MongoDB. In his current role, Ben helps customers with MongoDB architecture and adoption. Prior to joining MongoDB, Ben ran a software consultancy, and also worked as a software engineer at AWS and Marklogic. 7:30pm Networking Please RSVP here: mongodb.com/events/virginia-mug-march-2019

  • A new type of data pipeline: MongoDB Atlas, AWS Lambda, and Amazon Kinesis

With its high utilization granularity and low startup overhead, serverless computing is well suited for bursty/event-driven applications, common with streaming data. But serverless solutions are ephemeral, so persistent data must be handled by an external system. AWS Lambda is the preeminent offering in the serverless computing field, and although there are several data layer options to pair with it, MongoDB Atlas is full-featured and free from vendor lock-in -- an even more important consideration than usual with such a nascent technology. This session will showcase MongoDB Atlas, AWS Lambda, and Amazon Kinesis Streams in an operational workflow as might be used to consume and process a social application’s activity feed. We will cover how to create your Amazon Kinesis Streams for streaming data processing, capturing events, and triggering your AWS Lambda functions, all while using MongoDB Atlas and MongoDB Compass for persistent data storage and real-time streaming data analysis.

  • MongoDB Evolution - Come see what’s new in v3.4

Abstract: NoSQL databases like MongoDB embody the next generation ideals in database technologies as they provide the flexibility to handle evolving use cases and opportunities. Because they’re built with the developer very much in mind, there sometimes are misconceptions about their viability for large scale, enterprise deployments. In this session we’ll go over the new capabilities in MongoDB 3.4 as a multi-purpose enterprise database, and attempt to abate the misconceptions around MongoDB and its enterprise readiness. Presenter: Tosin Ajayi, MongoDB Location Change: We will meet at Snagajob's new (yes, this should last new office location for a little while) and super cool office in Rosslyn, Arlington, VA.
