“Bring in the May” with Washington Revels during their fun and festive celebration of Spring at the All Hallows Guild Flower Mart — a popular two-day festival held on the grounds of Washington National Cathedral since 1939. The final day of the Flower Mart culminates in Washington Revels’ annual outdoor May Revels performance marking the “greening of the year.” The merriment kicks off with a boisterous procession as we parade in to the notes of our “Noisy Band.” Enjoy traditional dances performed by our “Tween Chorus,” delightful singing games brought to life by Revels Children, and a Spring mummers play filled with butterflies, bees, faeries, slapstick comedy and bad puns galore. Sing along on timeless Spring songs like “Wild Mountain Thyme” and everyone’s favorite musical-memory challenge, “Rattlin’ Bog”! Finally, be sure your children are watching closely during our colorful (and intricate) Maypole dance — after the Revelers finish, it’s the kids’ turn to get in on the fun! Washington Revels has teamed with BlackRock Center for the Arts to welcome the arrival of Spring with a free afternoon of traditional music, dance and more at the first annual outdoor BlackRock SpringFest. We’re very excited to bring our 35-year celebration of the “greening of the year” to northern Montgomery County! Enjoy a day of entertainment by Revels and BlackRock’s creative partners, plus food trucks and arts & crafts vendors. We’ll kick off May Revels at 4 pm with a fun, colorful procession as our 100-person cast dances and sings through the BlackRock lawn with a bright array of banners, puppets and props, to the exuberant sounds of our “Noisy Band.” Once we’ve reached the outdoor stage, our merry Revelers will sing, dance, and crown this year’s “Monarchs of the May” — and at their command, the festivities will really begin! Laugh along with a silly Spring play filled with slapstick humor and bad puns galore, enjoy traditional children’s games and dances from jolly old England, and try to keep up with all the words during the fast-paced, sing-along musical memory challenge Rattlin’ Bog! Kids can even join in on the colorful Maypole dance, and there will be plenty of opportunities for people of all ages to participate throughout the performance. Before our band of revelers takes the stage, you’ll be treated to two hours of terrific performances by Kuchipudi Dance Academy, Story Tapestries, Culkin School of Dance, and the Maryland MacMillan United Pipe Bands. With great music, dance, theater, food, and drink, the inaugural BlackRock SpringFest is sure to put you in a festive May mood. More info: http://revelsdc.org/2019/may5-may-revels-blackrock/
On the second Thursday of every month, enjoy the fun as well as the mental and physical health benefits of dancing with others! Are you yearning for more community engagement? More joy? More cultural activities? More exercise? We’ve got it all covered in one stop — come along and dance! May's dance features Devine Comedy (Steve Hickman, John Devine, and Marty Taylor) with caller DeLaura Padovan! No experience required: each session starts at 7:00 pm with a 30-minute lesson, and then dances are “called” from 7:30-10 (this means the steps are called out loud so you can follow along). All levels of experience are welcome. The Contra Dances are presented by Carpe Diem Arts in partnership with the Folklore Society of Greater Washington and Washington Revels, with support from BE ACTIVE: Montgomery County Department of Recreation. TICKETS: Free to first-timers! $10 general; $8 FSGW, BFMS, CDSS members & Washington Revels; $5 students and those without income MORE INFO: http://revelsdc.org/2019/may9-contra-dance/
