What we're about

For singers and musicians who love Soul. We meet regularly to play classic Soul songs in the original arrangements with a full band, including background vocals, horns and strings!

We’ve got great material for you to play whether you sing falsetto or bass; whether you play tambourine or organ, piccolo, bass trombone or glockenspiel.

We have workshops several nights a week during term time – with two sessions each evening. We cover every area of Soul music - the vocal groups, the solo artists, the instrumentals, from small group to orchestra - with the repertoire of each workshop determined by the interests and tastes of its participants.

I transcribe the charts for horns and strings – and sometimes for background vocals, percussion and other instruments.

To see our current repertoire in each workshop, please visit our spreadsheet: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1Zb1... (https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1Zb1cMKrOMDvxacsw9AoRRstkx-M7r_NIrF4tZJIREU0/edit?usp=sharing)

For most of our events, there is a fee. This covers our substantial costs for studio and equipment hire; printing, transcription and Meetup costs. Typically, fees for each workshop session are £120 for a 12-week term; £15 for a Drop-in session and £10 for the Taster sessions we run at the start of each term.

This is for you if you are:

• a backing vocalist

• a lead vocalist

• a backing vocalist who wants to develop their lead vocal skills

• a lead vocalist who wants to develop their backing vocal skills

• a singer who wants to develop their percussion skills

• a musician who wants to accompany singers and support them

Use your existing skills and develop new ones.

The Soul repertoire offers an incredibly rich variety of vocal combinations. We will be able to choose songs to suit whatever combination of leads and backing vocals we get.

Have fun singing essential, but often neglected elements of the arrangements. Vocal backgrounds play an important role in Soul - using call-and-response; creating variety of texture; defining sections of the song; differentiating repeats of the same section; building excitement.

The workshop will be led by Andy Dummett.

Andy has been privileged to play with many of the great singers, songwriters and musicians from Stax, Atlantic, Motown and more

These workshops can support what you do in your own bands and in band workshops run by the Institute of Rhythm & Blues (https://www.meetup.com/London-Institute-of-Rhythm-Blues-Meetup/)
