Meet For Speed: learn more about website optimization

*** Note: If this event fills up you can RSVP at the Boston GTUG Meetup Group ***

Based on a very successful recent event (Meet For Speed) held at Google's main campus, this meeting will discuss website optimization, and we'll be prepared to do some hands-on work optimizing web sites.

This is a joint meeting between Boston GTUG and the Boston Web Performance Meetup group.

We're pleased to have, as leaders of the meeting, Josh Marantz, Pat Meenan, and Bryan McQuade, all Google employees.

The event will be held at HubSpot, one of Boston GTUG's long-standing sponsors, at 6:30PM on Tuesday April 17th. Thanks to HubSpot's generosity, we'll also have refreshments and food, including pizza.

More details:

Do you wonder if your website could be faster? Have you longed to have a performance guru give you pointers on how to improve your site? Like to reduce latency for your users but unsure what needs to be done? Confused about which optimizations provide the greatest bang-for-the-buck? Then this workshop is for you.

Bring your website to the session where some of the leading proponents of web optimization and measurement will provide practical, step-by-step help on ways to improve the performance of your site. A handful of select sites will be showcased with each site being worked on by a facilitator and a team of attendees.

If you are interested in understanding the details of website optimization and participating in a workshop aimed at improving site performance, please RSVP. If you’d like to have your site be used in the workshop, please provide the site URL and a note on any performance improvements you have tried here. We will follow up with you and request additional info, if your site is selected.

Good practical, advice and well presented by the speakers. I would have been nice if
they had a couple of examples web sites they had picked out for specific points about

I got a lot of value out of watching Pat, Bryan and Joshua analyze the performance of the sites that were suggested.

I liked the presentation and the discusion all together. The only downsize not due to the presentation but to my limited exposure to the complexity of web servers on Unix platforms.

Generally a good meetup. I would have liked them to walk through the pagespeed tools in more detail, and outline their capabilities. They sort of assumed we had knowledge/experience with them. However, I didn't ask, so that one's on me.

I would have given it 5 stars if not for everyone silently making fun of my poor website, j/k. It was good stuff and I learned a lot. I think the Google guys took the right approach by focusing on people's problems instead of just doing a slide presentation.

Picked up a few good tips/tricks for using WPT. Presenters did a really good job considering they had to juggle screens across three machines.

Ideally it should have been started at 6:30 p.m. as advertised, so I would have not need to leave earlier to catch my train ;-)

Patrick, Jonathan and Bryan were great. It was fun to have the whole Google team in person to share their knowledge and passion on all things speed. The format was insightful and I learned a few new ways to use WebPageTest and PageSpeed.

Wow, 120 people on the list from both groups. Looks like it will be a big turnout.
