Performance Mistakes–an HTTP Archive deep dive

Needs a location

Web performance is a complicated topic, but over the years it’s become easier to articulate thanks to incredible advancements in performance features, their adoption in the browser ecosystem and tools that test and give insight into which techniques might speed up your site.

However, all too often a feature is implemented incorrectly, resulting in a lost opportunity for performance improvement. During this talk Paul will explore a few common web performance techniques - some that you are likely already familiar with. He’ll dive into HTTP Archive data to find some examples of sites that are using them incorrectly, and explore the impact and potential benefits of fixing them.

Paul Calvano (@paulcalvano) is a Performance Architect at Etsy. He's also a co-maintainer of the HTTP Archive, a really cool open source project that has been tracking the evolution of the web since 2010, and author of various chapters of the Web Almanac.

Etsy will also be our host this month! They will provide light bites: gluten free, dairy free, and vegan options will be available. The drink options will be: wine, beer, sparkling water, still water, and non-alcoholic beer.

As always, we are going to have geekaways with geeky prizes provided by our sponsors.

Agenda:
6:30 - Arrive at Etsy, meet other members
6:45 - Event starts
7:00 - Performance Mistakes–an HTTP Archive deep dive (Paul Calvano)
8:00 - Q&A
8:15 - "Books and Stuff" geekaways

[On-line] Meet for SPEED

Link visible for attendees

For time being we are going to do these as LIVE using Zoom instead of meeting in person. The price will also be right as we are making them FREE - you have to provide your own food though ;)

You can see Zoom link when you RSVP.
(please don't share the direct Zoom link as we don't want to be Zoombombed - it happened multiple times before unfortunately).

***

Join up for an opportunity to work together on optimizing our sites.

You can benefit even if you can't edit your site right now - we will be happy to share the knowledge. We'll all learn how to see what's slow and how to make it fast!

Here is what you can learn:

  • Identify optimization opportunities using WebPageTest.
  • Become a master in reading the network waterfall.
  • Understand the most of the performance flame chart.
  • Learn the latest trends in measuring site speed.
