Topping the WebPerf Leaderboard: How Dotdash Optimized for Sitespeed & Load Time

One of the most commonly given pieces of advice for websites looking to set performance metrics is to look at your competitors, and beat them by 20%. For many industries, finding appropriate competitors can be a challenge in and of itself, but in publishing the Webpagetest-based "Article Performance Leaderboard" at https://webperf.xyz serves as a competitive space for 50+ online publications. This talk will explore how Dotdash learned from the Leaderboard's best performers, incorporated and adapted their approaches, and leveraged our in-house technology stack to take Dotdash sites to be at the top 5 of the leaderboard consistently. Speakers: Ben Cochran, VP of Front end Engineering at Dotdash: As the VP of Engineering at Dotdash Ben manages and mentors the front end engineers who develops and maintains the entire dotdash application portfolio including our consumer facing and publishing technology applications. He is absolutely obsessed with anything JavaScript and loves a challenge. Matt Durr, VP of Back End Engineering at Dotdash: Having worked in the web content industry since Perl was the bees knees, Matt has built and witnessed the ebb and flow of web technologies, various platform architectures, and web standards. He works with all of the engineering teams at Dotdash with a focus on the back-end architectures and technologies (web servers, frameworks, and services). He likes to keep up to date with new tech and love learning all the things. One focus throughout his career has been application performance and the myriad of potential solutions in that space. Dotdash is hosting us this time. And they'll be providing food and drinks! As always, we are going to have geekaways with geeky prizes provided by our sponsors. Think Fast, First: Empowering Performance Culture

Meetup HQ - 9th Floor

$5.00

There are several paths to tackle Performance optimizations, and many more to keep them. This is the story of establishing a performance culture by empowering non-technical team members to understand, own, and plan their impact during the development cycle. Over the past year, Hearst has worked to improve performance across the stack. We will be covering how we progressively refactored our legacy app, performance tips, tooling, and our roadmap. Alfredo Lopez (@lfredolo), Director of Engineering at Hearst is working with technical and non-technical teams to develop tools and guidelines that abstract best practices into measurable business goals. Meetup is hosting us again. And they still have food and beer! As always, we are going to have geekaways with geeky prizes provided by our sponsors. Agenda: 6:30 - Arrive at Meetup, meet other members 6:45 - Event starts 7:00 - Think Fast, First: Empowering Performance Culture (Alfredo Lopez) 8:00 - Q&A 8:15 - "Books and Stuff" geekaways 8:30 - Open Discussion, Networking Location: Meetup 632 Broadway 9th floor New York, NY Directions on Google Maps: https://goo.gl/VUw23K Entrance on StreetView: https://goo.gl/h4Cwh6 Our Sponsors: - Fastly (https://www.fastly.com/) is the only CDN that gives businesses complete control over how they serve content and the ability to cache frequently changing content at the edge. - Catchpoint's (https://www.catchpoint.com/) end-user experience monitoring provides complete visibility into users’ experiences from anywhere to detect and fix issues faster.
