What we're about

Artists, Musicians, Makers, Dancers, Crafters, Designers, Reiki Masters, Massage Lovers, Tattoo Lovers, Lovers of the Weird, Tarot Readers, Burners, Hoopers, Fire Dancers, Yogi's, and just interesting folks who love life, love connecting and creating and sharing.

It is more of a state of mind than a particular job or hobby that brings us together at "The Weirdery". We are not just "outside the box" thinkers, we have grabbed the box, painted it, added a few feathers and turned it into a cool lamp.

We will have Meetups that are meant to connect with like minded souls in an open minded environment, enhance our talents, drive our creativity and inspire each other.

All members can post meetups. Cross-posting related meetups originating in other groups is encouraged.

Barton Springs drum circle

Barton Springs

Come on out for a couple hours of fun drumming at Barton Springs near the "monkey tree" south of the walkway to the free area springs wading area. Paul will bring extra drums and shakers to share if there are at least 10 RSVPs. Dancing, hooping, singing, clapping, chanting and use of other percussion friendly instruments is encouraged. How to find us: Turn onto Robert E. Lee from Barton Springs Road and look for a place to park on the right, in the parking lots that are across the street from Umlauf Gardens. The drum circle starts at approximately 4 pm DST and usually lasts until sundown. If you can't find us, turn the car off, get out, and listen for the drumming. If you don't hear the drumming then you are in the wrong area. " ... sometimes you might show up right on time and nobody is there yet. I have learned that if I hang around for a few minutes, people will start showing up." - Gayle The drum circle is located where the aqua thumbtack is on the following map. https://maps.google.com/maps/ms?msid=206725990956594906051.0004a6d238da540b2f282&msa=0&ll=30.264776,-97.7667

FREE HUGS at First Thursday

Sidewalk in front of Allens Boots on South Congress

Bring a sign that says "FREE HUGS". There will usually be people there who have extra signs; so, if you decide you want to come at the last minute, and don't have your own sign, come anyway. I usually stay for about an hour. There is street parking or you can park in the parking lot of the church across the street for $5. Bring water to drink, if it is warm, you will sweat! I'm on the far right of the photo. Signs should have good contrast. Black letters on white paper or cardboard is good. You need to be able to hold on to the sign while you are hugging, so keep that in mind. I make my signs from 14" x 11" posterboard (buy at a drugstore, craft store, Big Lots, etc.) using a wide point black permanent marker. Make the letters big and bold. the posterboard I use is thin enough that I can copy the lettering from an 8 1/2 x 11 sheet of paper printed with "FREE HUGS" (Using a font size that fills the page in landscape mode.). I use a window (during daylight) as a light box to do the copying. Be respectful of the people walking by, some people will want hugs, others won't. Give hugs to people who want them. Have fun. If people want to, we can go to a bar or restaurant after we finish hugging. RSVPs are not required, but nice to do so other people won't think they will be the only one from Weirdery Austin there. This is not limited to members of Weirdery Austin, so the number of RSVPs may not reflect how many people will be there giving out free hugs.
