What we’re about

What's Elixir?

Elixir is a robust performant fault-tolerant scalable functional language that is a growing choice for solving many problems. It's becoming more popular in Wellington with several companies using for their development.

What we're about

This meetup aims to foster that growth and provide support for Elixir development in Wellington.

Who's this meetup for?

If you're keen to meet up with others interested in learning, using and solving difficult problems with Elixir then this is the meetup for you.

How to get involved?

Follow updates and news on twitter: https://twitter.com/wellixir and we hang out+chat in the Elixir Slack's #new-zealand channel, you can signup here: http://bit.ly/slackelixir. Note that we are still in the process of updating the slack inviter.

What kinds of meetings do we have?

Based on our experiences and member feedback from September 2020 our activities will fall into four groups: Welcome to Elixir sessions, technical and non-technical presentations, and collaborative hacking/problem solving sessions.

Rather than have a set monthly date and time and venue for activities, activities will take place based on participant availability. Some will take place at a sponsor workplace, some will take place online/virtually (more so in a lockdown situation). Activities will be announced several weeks in advance.

Welcome to Elixir sessions

For the uninitiated, getting up to speed with Elixir can be daunting. We are planning to have a small rotation of introduction sessions that help participants setup Elixir on their machine and learn core concepts such as key concepts, language structure and running and debugging Elixir programs.

Technical and non-technical presentations

We welcome presentations, both deeply technical and non-technical. If you want to get a better understanding of something, what better way than to try to explain it to someone else? We welcome remote presenters. Presenters may choose to present either remotely or at a sponsor's location and the date and time will be decided in conjunction with the presenter's schedule.

Collaborative hacking and problem solving

These sessions will include group programming to solve some programming puzzles. They are also an opportunity to discuss as a group how to solve certain problems.

Elixir Sydney

The Elixir Sydney (https://www.meetup.com/elixir-sydney/) meetup group meets online every third Wednesday of the month from 9 pm NZ time. It's a great group and a bit larger than the Wellington one. We invite you to take advantage of its online nature.

How to help out

If you want to help the running of the group please get in touch as well. We're trying to foster this community and that are lots of things we can all do to make a positive difference.

We are working to be more responsive to the needs of the Wellington Elixir community and we will be soliciting input to adjust how the meetup works so that it works better for you. Feel free to let us know how we can make this meetup even better.
