One of the Wellington area classic weekend hikes β a must do!
Time: 12 hr (very steep please read the description on the DOC website.), 4 hour day and 8 hour day involving steep climbs and tops travel, approx 1200m elevation gain.
Distance: 24 km
Difficulty: You need to have good fitness for this - be able to walk for a full day with a pack.
The plan is for a 2 day weekend trip leaving Wellington on Saturday morning and driving to the Holdsworth carpark (near Masterton) which will take approximately 1.5hrs. Walk to Powell Hut on Saturday which takes about 4 hours or 8 hours (depending on direction) and then do the rest of the walk on day 2 which will take either 4 or 8 hours. Direction TBC the week of depending on weather. If the weather is poor we can still get to the hut and return the same way (no tops travel).
Huts on this track are bookable so you need to book Powell hut for the Saturday night ($15 or free with a backcountry pass). Please confirm once you have booked the hut by liking my msg (15/08) in the comments so I know you're committed. https://booking.doc.govt.nz/Menu.aspx?sg=MHJ
Be prepared for cold windy wet weather as it can get nasty on the tops.
A shared meal worked well last time so those interested can participate again. Please indicate interest in RSVP
Things to bring include:
Tramping boots/strong hiking shoes (no sneakers), plenty of warm layers(beanie, gloves), warm sleeping bag, waterproofs, plenty to eat (1x breakfast, 1x dinner (if not in for shared meal), 2x lunch and high energy snacks), 1.5L+ water, plates / utensils, cooking pot (hut has gas stoves), head torch, toilet paper, first aid kit, sunscreen, hat, walking poles and PLB if you have these. Bring something to drink if you wish and any (light, portable) games are encouraged. http://www.trampingnz.com/info-gear-list for a comprehensive list.

π© Etiquette:
π Answer all RSVP questions whether you are on the waiting list or not.
π Study the description and meeting points. Preparation is paramount for an incident-free trip.
π be confident you have the required fitness and capabilities before RSVP-ing, any questions please ask :).
π Drivers especially need to know where to go beforehand, otherwise arriving at the wrong place, can inconvenience the whole group.
π Be considerate by keeping your RSVP up to date at all times, and do not pull out a few days, before the trip begins, otherwise, you will block someone who may want to join.
π Please be contactable, to others. If organizers need to, or your passenger/driver needs to make arrangements, etc, then make sure private messaging (via meetup) is not blocked, your cell phone is turned on, and text messages are regularly checked.
π Pay your driver.
π Please DO NOT RSVP if you are going to join the hike late, or leave early. It just makes things complicated and difficult to organize.
π Keep together in groups while walking.
Thanks π
