What we're about

A group for those who enjoy a day spent walking on the hills; whether it's the Mendips, Quantocks, Exmoor or further afield. I live in Weston-super-Mare... But prefer to spend my free time elsewhere!

My name's Olly. I've been a regular hillwalker since 2012 and a walk leader with a Bristol-based Ramblers group since 2013. I am not qualified, although I do hold a Bronze NNAS certificate (future plans include attaining a Silver NNAS and perhaps a Hill and Moorland Leader qualification). I often walk alone, sometimes with friends and aim to be able to bring local people together with these events.

Our walks will average between 8 and 16 miles in length; perhaps only 10-12 miles during the winter months. My initial aim is to host one-to-two walks each month. If anyone is interested in hosting and leading walks of any length or location, please let me know and I'll be happy to support and assist.

As of March 2020, I will be asking for a donation of £1 per walk. This is not compulsory and anyone who does not wish to pay is still welcome to walk with us. Hosting this page on Meetup costs me money and I'm only looking to recoup this expense. Any "profit" gained will either be donated to a local charity or reinvested in to the group.

If you have any questions, the best thing to do is ask me. :-)

I look forward to meeting you on a walk, one day.

Upcoming events (4)

Tickenham Moor and Cadbury Camp (7.25 miles)

A relatively short walk on the edge of Clevedon, with one significant climb up to Cadbury Camp. We start by crossing Tickenham Moor - it's likely to be muddy in parts and there may be livestock present. From there we cross the busy B-road and climb up to Cadbury Camp; an Iron Age hillfort not to be confused with Cadbury Castle. We'll then follow a section of the Gordano Round path over the M5, then zig-zag down through the woods to return to the road and our start. As this is a shorter walk than usual, I'm only planning to stop once for lunch as we reached Cadbury Camp (weather permitting, of course). Please pack considerately given the time of year and likely weather. Items to consider include: walking boots, gaiters, waterproofs, extra layers, spare socks, food/snacks, water and a warm drink. Any questions? Please get in touch. I will be asking a small free for each walk after this one to cover my own costs. If anyone would like to donate 50p or £1 on this occasion, you are most welcome to but I will not ask or expect it. If any non-drivers from Weston require a lift, please make yourselves known either in the comments below or by messaging me privately. I look forward to seeing you there! :-)

River Parrett and Pawlett Round (11 miles)

West Huntspill

£1.00

Our first hour will be spent following country roads through Pawlett (a necessary evil to make this walk in to a circuit). After the only hill of the day, we meet the England Coast Path just north of Dunball and follow the River Parrett for several miles, with views to the Bristol Channel and estuary. From a sluice crossing, we then follow the Huntspill River back to the cars. A very flat walk and hopefully scenic on a good day. With full exposure to the elements throughout, waterproofs and layers may be required (along with the usual water, snacks, warm drink, etc). We'll aim to have two breaks on this walk - one for snacks and then one for lunch. Any questions? Please feel free to message me or comment below. Please note that this is the first walk in which I am asking for a small fee. This is purely to cover my own costs of maintaining this page on Meetup. Any profit made at the end of the year will most likely be given to a local charity. I'm happy for people to message me privately with feedback on this idea. My intention is not to deter or turn people away. I look forward to seeing you there. :-)

Brent Knoll and Berrow (11.25 miles)

Brent Knoll

£1.00

***Start point to be confirmed.*** A mostly flat walk across the Somerset Levels and along Berrow Beach, with the climb to the top of Brent Knoll (an Iron Age hillfort) somewhere along the way. Please pack considerately given the time of year and likely weather. Items to consider include: walking boots, gaiters, waterproofs, extra layers, spare socks, food/snacks, water and a warm drink. Sun cream?!? Any questions? Please get in touch. I do now include a charge with my walks (to cover my own costs) but I will not turn away anyone who does not wish to pay. I view it merely as a donation to cover the costs of hosting on Meetup. If any non-drivers from Weston require a lift, please make yourselves known either in the comments below or by messaging me privately. I look forward to seeing you there! :-)

Mendip Challege 2020

Weston super Mare Cricket Club

PLEASE NOTE: This group is not hosting the event. This is merely a placeholder/advert to let people know about the annual Mendip Challenge, which is organised by and in support of Weston Hospicecare. As I'll be taking part, there will be no group walks from me on this date. Please see the website for full details: https://www.westonhospicecare.org.uk/mendip/ I've signed up for the 30 mile walk, where 20 and 10 mile options are also available (start times vary throughout the day). Check points with refreshments are provided. It is always very well organised, hundreds of people turn out each time and I've enjoyed down this in rain and shine. There is no obligation to donate or raise a penny in sponsorship. Whichever distance you choose, the walk follows the West Mendip Way and each walk finishes back at the cricket club. Coaches will take you from Weston to the start point, whether that's Wells (30 miles), Draycott (20 miles) or Kings Wood (10 miles). Dogs and (crazy) runners are welcome. This will be my seventh(!) consecutive year doing the walk. I hope you'll consider challenging yourself. It's all for a worthy cause and I'm happy to answer any questions you may have. :-)
