About Rick Drost:
Rick Drost writes and sings songs with depth and heart, songs that repay repeated listening and convey a long love of classical music, natural wonders, poetry. His songs treat life from a varied angles - Jilted lovers, swans in the Public Garden, leftover lobsters, and meditations on meditation. Longtime inspiration came from Joni Mitchell and Leonard Cohen; recent influences include Vance Gilbert and David Wilcox, who covers Drost's song "Turning the World" in live performances. Drost's latest CD "Turning the World", produced by Jon Shain (Durham, NC), continues to get airplay from Europe across America to New Zealand. The album was reviewed in the National acoustic journal, No Depression: "Rick is an engrossing storyteller, much in the same mold as Tom Rush, Tom Paxton, John Sebastian" John Apice, No Depression, Jan 2018.
Rick grew up in a musical family, playing classical piano from an early age into high school, when he took up banjo and sang with a Kingston Trio type group. In college he sang and toured with the glee club, and a largish folk group. Seeing Joni Mitchell three nights running in a little coffeehouse in 68 inspired him to start writing and singing in coffeehouses. Once in Boston, he sang with a small folk-rock group, the Spectrum Singers, a small classical chorus, and toured with the Yale alumni chorus to Russia, the UK, and South America.
Since retiring from his career as a software engineer, Rick travels from Cambridge, MA to sing at coffeehouses, house concerts, small festivals and Folk Alliance Events from New England, to Colorado to the Southeast.
