What we're about
Welcome! This group is being offered to the widowed in Des Moines and the surrounding areas. We are excited and hope you are too, as we meet, explore different things, and socialize attempting to familiarize ourselves with this new lifestyle.
We hope you will join us, share ideas, and make this a great group. No one wants to be in this group, but it’s a lot better to know and share with others who get it, and we get it.
You Are NeverAlone!
We are under the “umbrella” of Soaring Spirits Intl. We believe connecting with other widowed people makes the challenges of surviving a spouse or life partner easier to manage.
We will offer to widowed women and men understanding, friendship, inspiration, and encouragement, as we all learn to live without the person we planned to spend the rest of our lives with.
We Believe that,
Here is a bit about the two leaders of this group
Sherry Brooks—I lost my husband, Leonard, suddenly at the age of 47, on 9/7/17 after nearly 28 years together. I am new on this journey, but after attending Soaring Spirits’ Camp Widow in San Diego, I just knew we needed more support and socializing here in Central Iowa. I applied for the Regional Leader position and started that a few days after returning. I have two boys (Leo who is 15 and will be in 10th grade, and Lex who is 12 and entering 7th). I am a high school English teacher at Central Academy in Des Moines as well and I cannot wait to meet more folks in my position. Though I love my friends, they are all married and can’t quite get it.
I lost my husband, Fred
(Byron), on 7-13-13, totally unexpectedly, at the age of 64, after nearly 40 years of marriage. (I had never had my own bedroom! ) We were blessed with 2 daughters, and now have 7 grandchildren!
Several of you that I know, have heard me say we needed a Meet Up Group in our area; thus Sherry and I were chatting one late night, early morning and she said she was working with Soaring Spirits to start one. A new friendship was born and she invited me to join her as a Co-Regional Leader, and I graciously yelled “yes!” You either know or will hear me say it many times, “I am blessed,” I truly am by my memories, family, and friends; especially the ones I have met on this journey, that truly get it! I look forward to this new adventure in this position, new friendships, sharing, and memories, and many, many hugs! I am blessed and will see you soon.
You have been added to this group because you are a friend of either Sherry or PJ, and we are seeing a couple of others being added by friends as well! Please help us expand this group and spread the word.
So again, We welcome you all no matter what stage you are on this journey. Please feel free to reach out to others, or share with us the name and we will reach out. We also have information for those who are just embarking on this journey, as we remember what is was like having questions and not knowing where to look for additional support. Ask and we will find answers for you.
This is going to be fun! We will create social events we hope you are going to enjoy, and you will because your voice counts, and we want to have your input!
Looking forward to meeting everyone; we promise this will be a relaxed, friendly, and heartfelt group!
