The Winter Hike Week in the Smokies (WHW) is an annual winter hiking event which focuses on led hikes in the wintertime in the Smokies. This past 2019 WHW was a great success. This event, which used to be sponsored by the Southeastern Foot Trails Coalition, is now an independent event open to the general public. There is no charge to attend the event. Attendees will make their own reservations at the host motel or other facility in the host town. The event may move from location to location. This coming year, 2020, we will again locate our event on the west side of the Smokies. Our host hotel is again the Music Road Inn in Pigeon Forge, TN.
The 2020 WHW will be from Monday through Friday to take advantage of the lower winter hotel rates on weekdays. Many led hikes will be offered each day, ranging from easy to difficult, short to long. Social events will occur as well, including social hours and going out to local restaurants.
The night before each day of hiking we will post in the lobby of the hotel the hikes planned for the coming day with descriptions of the hikes and sign-up sheets. We usually have 5 or 6 hikes offered each day. Also, besides our regular hike leaders, we are open to anyone attending the WHW to lead a hike. Those new hike leaders will be given a free Winter Hike Week Leader hat.
WHW hikers must understand that they are responsible for their own safety. Consider these hikes as a group of friends going out on the trail to enjoy the winter in the Smokies. We will carpool to the hike trailheads and we will be looking for volunteers to use their own car to transport other hikers.
On this site, member clubs and members may post hiking related events in the southeast open to all, not just their members. For example, an event similar to the WHW which their local club is sponsoring or a regional trail construction and maintenance course.
