Women After Hours
20th Anniversary Dance
on
Saturday, June 23, 2012
at Glastonbury Pond House Grille

By Don Church & Tony Schillaci, www.Examiner.com/hartford/Out&Travelin’

As we move into the gay pride season, there is one organization that is the essence of all that is positive and progressive in our community.
Women After Hours (WAH) was founded by partners Jo and Cyndi in 1992. It filled a void for women who loved women as bars for them opened and closed in the Hartford, Connecticut area. There had been too few social events for lesbian women in those years.

Beginning as a monthly social, WAH was a private party for those women who needed a safe place to dance and be themselves in a public accommodation. The dances were held at the Holiday Inn of East Hartford, Conn. every month for twelve years. Dances and concerts were hosted by the couple as they created a women’s space that was truly enjoyable.
By 2001, as the owners of the dance were ready to retire, along came a new owner, Chris Sesta, who transformed the dance into a broader venue that draw women from all over New England.
Chris has taken another giant step for the whole community by making the yearly February dances open for all GLBTs and their straight friends. They are also evenings in memory of DJ Rosa, who passed away a few years ago.
“DJ Rosa and her partner DJ Lynn were our dedicated DJs’ for 4 years, when suddenly Rosa became ill, and within a few months passed away from a brief battle with her illness.” Chris explained, and added, “Rosa loved people and music so our dances and events are always full of wonderful women like her who enjoy DJ Lynn, DJ Cindy DJ Raine and making new friends, or possibly even finding love!”
"It has been an honor to be a featured DJ for the Women after Hours Dance for the last 7 years, says Lorrie Wesoly/DJ Raine, who added, “I also had the privilege of being there when the original owners, Cindy and Jo first came up with the idea 20 years ago. These dances have been a gift to our community, a safe and desirable place for women to gather and celebrate their relationships. One of the most wonderful aspects of the dance is that it embraces and is enjoyed by women of all ages. WAH is now fortunate that Chris Sesta continues this tradition which not only helps us to remain connected but also supports the needs of our community," DJ Raine concluded.
“Some say the WAH Dance is the longest ongoing ‘lesbian meet-up group’ for Hartford, Connecticut," states Chris, who went on to review the years past and share her expanded vision for the future of WAH, “We have seen throughout the years a huge need for caring for each other...as there are many women in our community that have health challenges and know not where to go, how to fill out paperwork for federal assistance, nor do many have partners that can help them. And so we now have ‘Angels Needed for this Journey,’ our first step in helping women who are in need, whether it be due to a health challenge or senior needs."
Chris continues, "There have been medical appliances located for women in need, hotel accommodations donated for visits to Boston for medical treatments, and fundraisers for helping families in need. This has become my newest project because we need a senior center and related/services for LGBTs in the Hartford, CT area....so stay tuned!”
The WAH 20th Anniversary celebration dance will be held at the Glastonbury Pond House Grille banquet facility on Main Street, Saturday, June 23, 2012. The Hilton Homewood Suites is located right behind the hall and offers great accommodations. For full details and other important information go to www.wahdance.com.
Chris says, “Come celebrate 20 years of living, laughing, loving and dancing together at the best known "meet-up" for women who love women!”
