• REAL LIFE MIXED GENDER friendly Chess Cafe chess/boardgames, London King's Cross

IF YOU'RE BOOKING ON THE SAME DAY, PLEASE use the Ticket Tailor link at the bottom to book, or email [masked] to get the info. Meetup has a glitch where it sometimes takes a while to us send your email address, and we need to send you venue info. Thanks! :)

Central London's real life, friendly, sociable, diverse, woman-run chess and boardgames cafe is BACK! :)

Join us for a mixed event where we play chess or board games, hangout over food and drinks, chat and make friends. It's an ideal way to meet people if you're new in town - most people come alone, and there are no awkward silences because of the chess/games.

Chess sets and clocks are provided (and some classic board games - bring your own if you want the latest) and you'll find a warm welcome. Chatty, relaxed chess games at all levels from absolute beginner to expert. :) As your host, I'll take good care to make sure you feel at home.

Venue details will be emailed to you within 24 hours of booking (or at 3pm or 5pm if you book on the day itself. If you book after the event start time, head towards King's Cross station and keep an eye on your email) - we have a cool, wheelchair accessible spot less than 5 minutes walk from King's Cross station.

PLEASE NOTE: we are temporarily 'test to enter' for your safety. Please bring your own, unused lateral flow test (LFT - or email me if you absolutely can't get hold of one). We'll each need to take a test at the door, in front of someone - the results develop quickly. :)

Looking forward to meeting you there! https://www.tickettailor.com/events/thequeensgambitchesswomensonlinelessonsandhangouts

  • Free Absolute Beginners Chess Lesson for Women ONLINE

    Online event

Join us for a free (donations welcome), friendly lesson for absolute beginners to chess, for women (this lesson is women-only - we run separate, mixed-gender courses). Learn how the pieces move - we assume you know nothing. The lesson will take place on Zoom (free to download and use).

After the lesson, there's a hang out at www.lichess.org for you to play other beginners. It's free to create an account, and there's no spam etc. Once you have a lichess account please request to join the Casual Chess team here - www.lichess.org/team/casual-chess IMPORTANT: please give your name as it is here on Meetup, in the join request.

Set up should take five minutes, and there are regular chess hangouts there five evenings per week. :)

The lesson will last 30 minutes, so please arrive on time. Thanks. :) Then we'll move to lichess to play some practice games there, for as long or short a time as you like.

  • COURSE STARTING Weds 19 Jan The Queen's Gambit Chess: Women Beginners: Checkmate

Every Wednesday, for 6 weeks from 19th January, we start at 7pm UK time, with an optional additional weekly practice session, two socials, video catch up and written notes.

You can enjoy everything we will learn, with any IQ or experience level - you only need to know how the chess pieces move. :)

This modular chess course is designed so each lesson stands alone - plus, there's video catch up - so please don't worry if you miss a session.

The course consists of 12 sessions – 6 interactive, practical lessons and 6 (optional) practice sessions. There will also be two (optional) social events, and lessons are available as catch up videos throughout the course. You'll be joining an awesome, diverse community of amazing, friendly women who also meet online weekly to play chess and chat.

From Opening to Checkmate for Women Beginners

We will be looking at how the positioning of our pieces in the opening, eventually leads to checkmate later in the game. You'll learn how to spot and create target squares and weaknesses, how to mount a strategic checkmating attack, and in turn how to defend against those things and avoid being blindsided by checkmates out of the blue!

You will improve your chess knowledge and skill, and have a lot of fun along the way.

Week 1: Destiny (chesstiny? Sorry, sorry, LOL!) - how opening choices can set the strategy for the whole game

Week 2: Making our own luck - finding or creating target squares

Week 3: Ducks in a row - rallying our pieces to attack those target squares

Week 4: Looming - how to mount (or defend against) an inevitable checkmating attack

Week 5: Finishing! Getting to that satisfying final checkmate

Week 6: Course Review and 'Checkmate Challenge'

You don't need a chess board, or anything other than an internet connection and a computer, laptop or tablet (a phone is okay, but perhaps a bit small).

Please, please book now if you can! This is the Earlybird price - the last-minute price will be much higher, possibly as much as double. Please do try to book at least one hour before the class starts, thank you (you'll receive your joining information at the email address you used to book/pay with, which may not be your main email address - please check).

Any questions at all, please do email Amanda at [masked] - if your questions is, 'Can I do this course if I only know how the pieces move/if I'm going to miss some lessons?' the answer is, YES, absolutely! :)

These courses support the work of the non-profit 'The Casual Chess Cafe/Queen's Gambit Chess Cafe', which has been working towards more equality and diversity in chess for the past six years.
