Kelly Churchill

Despite being from New Orleans, most consider Kelly a native Austinite; having lived in Austin for 12 years, she has lived here 6 times longer than most. Being raised in New Orleans has given Kelly traits that she shares with a lively city that's steeped in tradition. Growing up in the South in the time that she did, girls were not typically encouraged to pursue technical careers, so instead she began working as a secretary. However, the call of coding was powerful and Kelly finally answered by pursuing a degree in Computer Science while simultaneously starting a family. One of her proudest moments was earning her degree knowing that her daughters, ages six and four, were in the audience watching her walk across stage to receive her diploma. Since that time, Kelly has built her career as a web developer by freelancing and working for interactive agencies, and she is now a software engineer at IBM, where she focuses on front end development and serves as an accessibility expert on her product team.

Talk

Accessibility is a word that when spoken causes varied reactions from developers. Many developers realize the importance of creating accessible user interfaces, but given the reality that most websites on the Internet today are not accessible for persons with disabilities, many either fail to try because of the perceived difficulty, or fail because they think that simply adding  tags to the images on their website makes it accessible. While there is more to building accessible websites than using  tags, achieving accessibility becomes much easier when it is addressed at the design phase rather than until just before launch when someone thinks to ask, “is it accessible?” We will talk about some easy ways to incorporate accessibility into your projects from the beginning to avoid the difficult challenges of integrating accessibility into the functionality of an existing website, especially when those sites are being updated in a continuous delivery environment.
