The Creative Media & Digital Culture (CMDC) program teaches students to conceptualize applications of digital technologies and to think critically about digital media and the ways humans interact and engage with them.

On Jan. 28th, CMDC alumnae and current students will be showcasing AR, VR, 2D & 3D animations, websites, and a transmedia educational game environment that have been created for their own research or local community and cultural organizations. Experience and learn further about the creative and critical approaches CMDC students have used when working with digital technology.

• BioLabVR - http://dtc-wsuv.org/wp/biolabvr/

BioLabVR, a large-scale project aimed at producing the medium and tools for a multisensory, interactive, and immersive environment through which to teach concepts in biological sciences by direct experience, makes these activities possible. Our project taps into powerful, visceral experiential learning by creating a virtual reality (VR) environment that allows students to interact directly with biological objects and concepts, sense and perturb them, and naturally develop the basic intuition needed to comprehend concepts that students have previously been unable to experience.

• Kaegi Virtual Pharmacy - http://dtc-wsuv.org/projects/kaegi-gig/index.html

Kaegi Virtual Pharmacy is an exhibit that brings alive the experience of the Kaegi Pharmacy circa 1910 using virtual reality (VR) and augmented reality (AR) technologies. It was created for the Museum of the Oregon Territory (MOOT).

• T1VR - http://dtc-wsuv.org/projects/credc-vr/

Immerse yourself in the innovative culture of Vancouver, WA, learn about the many amenities that are becoming available to surrounding businesses, and explore the downtown area in this beautiful 3D environment designed for the Oculus Rift and Google Cardboard!

• Life Renewed http://dtc-wsuv.org/projects/life-renewed/

The Mount St. Helens Science & Learning Center’s “Life Renewed” project is a transmedia educational environment that tells the story about the rebirth of life on Mount St. Helens following the 1980 eruption. The project incorporates games and other forms of information via a touch screen installation and mobile device.

My Brain! is a mobile application that uses augmented reality to teach the functions and processes of the brain in relation to every day stimuli. The research asks the question: how can augmented reality be effectively integrated into brain education for students, particularly in a middle school science environment? The Pop Up Gallery team developed a mobile augmented reality based app in order to understand and answer this question. Using a combination of the Metaio AR SDK, the Microsoft Kinect SDK and traditional hand coded C++, the Pop Up Gallery team created an app that uses facial modeling rendered from an RGB-D camera to overlay a 3D brain on an individual’s face.

About the CMDC

The Creative Media & Digital Culture (CMDC) program offers a major and a formal minor leading to the Bachelor of Arts Degree (B.A.) in Digital Technology and Culture (DTC) at Washington State University Vancouver. It teaches students to conceptualize, in both research and practice, applications of digital technologies and to think critically about digital media and the ways humans interact and engage with them.

The CMDC program focuses on six areas of study within the field of digital media: 1) web & mobile design & development, 2) 2 & 3D animation for simulation and visualization, 3) digital publishing, 4) physical computing, 5) social media / SEO for digital marketing, and most recently 6) game studies & design. With over 250 students in the CMDC, it is now recognized as one of five Signature Programs on the WSUV campus.
