Using Git and GitHub - the Basics

If Github isn't already part of your developer toolbelt, join us on September 19th to get started with the basics. Git is the industry standard for codebase version control, and Github is a hosting platform that not only makes interfacing with Git easy and user-friendly, but it's also an invaluable tool for hosting your code and collaborating with teams.

This month Aubrey Northam will lead the group in a guided code-along to learn Git conventions, set up a GitHub account, and practice contributing to codebases on Github. This presentation will be geared towards beginners — and for those already comfortable with Git and Github, this will also be a refresher on best practices, common pitfalls, and helpful tips.

The agenda will be:

• 6:00pm - Welcome and Setup
• 6:15 - 6:20pm - Introductions
• 6:20 - 6:50pm - Presentation/Guided Code-Along
• 6:50 - 7:30pm - Free Code!
• 7:35 - 7:45pm - Wrap Up

A huge thanks to our sponsor, Mobelux, for providing an event space and dinner from a woman-owned local business!

About the speaker: Aubrey is a front end web developer at Mobelux and a relatively recent addition to Richmond. Outside of work hours, you can find her relaxing on the porch with her cats, attempting a DIY project around the house, or wandering the aisles of Target.
