As a developer, it is necessary to know different programming paradigms and be able to choose a paradigm based on the use case. Join us for an introduction to the two most common programming paradigms in use today: object oriented and functional programming. Learn about the differences between procedural and declarative programming and compare and contrast the styles by way of example. Topics include: encapsulation, polymorphism, pure and higher order functions as well as a discussion of state management.

Speakers:

Farzaneh Orak is a software engineer at Hunter Industries where she does mob programming everyday and follows agile practices at work. She recently finished her master’s degree from Cal State San Marcos and loves working with AWS services. She's active in the community, going to lots of meetups and working on her public speaking, starting with her first talk at SoCal Code Camp about InFunctional programming with JS. She's an adventurist and loves to travel, and she's learning Salsa and Bochata dance!

Matt Madson has been developing software in sunny Southern California for the better part of a decade coding everything from embedded communication systems on the F-35 Joint Strike Fighter to the servers that power your favorite PlayStation games. These days Matt is over at Intuit doing what he loves best, taking large monolithic applications and modularizing them into reusable components and microservices -- oh and helping you keep a little more money in your pocket when tax time comes around. When he's not slinging bits around, you'll likely find Matt hanging out with friends at one of the many karaoke bars in SD, belting out everything from Frank Sinatra to Journey.
