Speaker - Dave Sklar, Core Data Engineer @ Tumblr
Abstract -
As we celebrate the 50th anniversary of the first moon landing and look back on the amazing Apollo lunar-exploration program, we software folk may well wonder what computing innovations and programming techniques made that giant leap possible. In this talk, we'll not only learn how the Apollo Guidance Computer was used -- we’ll also meet the woman who led the software team (and who invented "software engineering” to ensure its success); we'll find out why Apollo 8 (rather than A11 or A13) was the riskiest Apollo mission of them all; and we'll relive the most stressful debugging session imaginable, as Margaret’s team struggled to explain computer error codes that occurred during that first landing. Speaker Bio -
After receiving a Masters of Computer Science at Brown University in 1983, Sklar stayed at Brown as a lecturer for five years, before diving headfirst into an early commercial hypertext venture as one of the first employees of Electronic Book Technologies, creating electronic books in the pre-PDF era. EBT was the start of a decades-long series of startup ventures, the latest of which (Vizify) was acquired by Yahoo/Verizon in 2014. Currently, Sklar constructs real-time data-analytics pipelines for Tumblr in New York City.
