We created the Women in Software Engineering (WiSE) Speaker Series to highlight the accomplishments of successful women engineers, and to connect women aspiring to be software engineers to mentors and peers.
The WiSE series is produced by Codesmith in an effort to improve the diversity gap in tech by collaborating with leading tech companies through mentorship and scholarship opportunities for women pursuing a software engineering education at Codesmith.
This month, we're excited to welcome Sanja Stegerer, Data Scientist at GumGum and Adriana Vecchioli, Founder & CTO of VelvetUnicorni.io.
Data Science at GumGum by Sanja Stegerer
The Data Science Team at GumGum supports the company’s core business: advertisement. Gumgum offers targeted advertisement and for this, the GumGum team needs to be able to extract important information about each page’s content before they serve an ad on it. Over the past five years, the DS team has built a text processing infrastructure which supports several important NLP tasks, like NER and keyword extraction, but also some that are tailored to Gumgum’s needs as an advertisement company (threat classification, content classification, event detection). In this talk, Sanja will introduce those applications of NLP and ML algorithms and how they impact the company’s ability to deliver high-quality advertisement and go into the technical details of GumGum's threat classification algorithm, one of their most important services.
Sanja Stegerer is a Data Scientist at Gumgum. She started her career in Data Science 2 years ago, after earning her degree in Mathematics and Biology from the University of Tuebingen, Germany in 2015. When she decided to pursue a career in Data Science, she utilized her mathematical training and taught herself the basic concepts of Machine Learning before applying for a Data Science position. At GumGum, Sanja works on NLP (natural language processing) projects, deep learning and keeping production systems up and running.
