Lightning Talks:

Rachel Chenery
Career Changer

“First impressions of being a woman in tech"
"#WITPledge: to continue the techreturners spirit by being a woman in tech

Until last year, Rachel was a solicitor, juggling working in private practice with care of her two young children. After nearly 15 years in the legal sector, she wanted to update her skills with a view to changing career direction. Being in the first cohort of Techreturners gave her the confidence to take the plunge and change direction. She is now studying at a coding bootcamp with a view to a new career in tech.”

Sarah Barlow
Head of Talent ROQ

“I have over twenty year’s experience in people management, recruitment and talent management. I have always been in a people focused role, they are key to the success of any business! Being Head of Talent at ROQ my focus, drive and passion is to attract the best talent and ensure everyone has a tailored development and career path that supports their progression. There is nothing more rewarding than seeing individuals grow in skills, ability and confidence.”

#WITPledge: Banish the MANel – the all-male panel

As a tech event organiser in Manchester I always struggle to find a balance between finding the best speakers for the topic and ensuring that representation is being considered and we have as diverse a panel/speakers as possible. My Pledge back in February was to try hard to banish to all-male panel that you so often get at events and tech meet-ups. Here I’ll go through what my experience has been, challenges I’ve faced and what I’ve learned.

As part of Arzu's #WITPLEDGE, Arzu is launching her mentorship circles! Arzu will explain how these will work, signing up members who want to join and will present the first session.

Mentorship circles:

We will all divide into four groups, each table hosting a mentor and facilitator, giving all a chance to:
- ask your career progression questions
- gain insights and advice from peers
- better understand how to navigate and steer your career to take it where you want it to go.

Our mentors for the evening will be:
- David Harrison - Director @ KPMG
- Jon Cleaver - CTO @InTheStyle
- Sarah Barlow - Head of Talent @ ROQ
- Beckie Taylor - CoFounder @CLOS Consultancy
