Find your path towards Data Science:
If you are considering a career transition into Data Science, there are more options and resources available to you than ever before. As you plan your path into the field, prepare yourself for the job hunt by diversifying your experience along the way. I will share my experience and observations from my career transition from Biology to Data Science. My informal talk will focus on selecting your learning plan, finding a community, developing real data science projects, and stepping back to remind yourself of the big picture.
Presentation by Heather A. Passmore, personal statement:
I recently transitioned into a career in professional data science after training as an academic biologist and plant ecologist and then teaching biology at the university level. In 2017 I enrolled in Springboard's Data Science Career Track workshop, an online, self-paced, mentor-lead program. I completed two predictive analytics projects using machine learning and natural language processing with Springboard. In 2018, I joined the Data Strategy team at GreatSchools.org, the national education technology non-profit that provides detailed ratings and information about K-12 schools, guidelines for community action, and resources for parents to find the best educational opportunities for their children. My background is in biology and plant ecology. I earned my Ph.D. from Louisiana State University where I studied the effects of large-scale natural disturbances (fires and hurricanes) on native plant communities. I enjoyed collaborative research in ecology and education as well as teaching before deciding to change my career path.
