WordPress Custom Post Types 101

Have you ever worked on a site with products, events, or interactive forms? Then you've worked with Custom Post Types. These extensions of WordPress core functionality provide a way to organize and structure content beyond the usual Pages and Posts.

Sometimes it's useful to create your own Custom Post Types to suit your content - e.g, if your site has a blog as well as other types of content. Movie reviews, recipes, biographies, publications - any type or category of content can be created to extend basic WordPress functionality.

In this presentation, Clare will provide an overview of custom post types:

  • What CPTs are, what they do, and how to recognize them in a site
  • When to use Custom Post Types
  • Utilities such as Post Type Switcher
  • Some solutions for common problems that arise when using CPTs
  • How to create your own custom post types with a plugin
  • How to create your own custom post types by copy/pasting code into a simple custom plugin

This presentation will be semi-technical, with some easy copy/paste PHP code.

As always, we'll have time for group discussion after the presentation. If you need help with anything WordPress, bring your laptop and one of our friendly members will be able to assist you!

Our usual schedule is:

6:00 pm - 6:20 pm Networking
6: 20 pm Introductions
6:30 presentations & discussion begins.

We are in Room 166, the first room on the left if you enter through the south entrance. Park way over in the southeast part of the lot.
