What we're about
Do you write speculative fiction and identify as queer, differently abled, LGBTQI, a person of color, a woman writer, neurodiverse--or have otherwise faced social and/or economic barriers to accessing a writing community? Are you working on a speculative fiction project or world-building for a novel set in the future? (Think: dystopian/utopian sci-fi, magical realism, imagining the world 50 years from now, Octavia Butler's "Parable of the Sower" series, etc.)
Words & Worlds is an East Bay-based meetup of folks who want to workshop and grow their ideas in a supportive and inclusive setting. We believe that some of the most compelling works of fiction tend to be informed by the personal experiences of the authors, and since everyone has a story to tell, we want to provide a space for individuals whose stories may otherwise be eclipsed by those with better access to writing support. We also believe that creating socially responsible fiction--that is, literature which avoids the use of tropes and harmful social stereotypes--is important, and a recurrent discussion topic during our meetings.
