Sound Talk: Producing Quality Voice-Over Recordings
presented by Rich Mattiello
Because video production is fast becoming a part of technical documentation, many tech writers are having to become video producers as well. However, it is easy to forget that half of video is audio, when there is a voice-over narration. Your video might look terrific, but if the audio sounds like it was recorded in a bathroom your video will scream, "Amateurs!" In this presentation, you will learn the basics of obtaining a good quality voice recording, the proper equipment to use, how to create a modest yet effective recording setup, eliminate noise, hums, and reverb (the "bathroom" effect), and some tips and best practices for audio editing.
ABOUT THE PRESENTER
Rich Mattiello is a technical writer and editor at Hitachi Vantara. In a prior career he was a corporate communications video and event producer. He has created and narrated instructional design videos for Google, where he also trained colleagues in the finer points of video production. He has a side hustle performing voice-over narration for scientific and medical training videos, which he records in his home studio, a skill he honed as a long-time student at Voicetrax voice acting school in Sausalito. You might have noticed him as our expert videographer for Write the Docs Bay Area meetup events!
