What we're about

Writing is like going to the gym or to the yoga studio -- it's just easier when there's a little peer pressure.

At Writers Blok, we provide everything you'll need for a productive writing session: unlimited coffee, tea, and snacks. Even the music is selected with writers in mind. And there's chocolate at the end. It's like going to the coffee shop, except that no one is going to look at you sideways because you haven't bought anything in an hour. What we're most proud of, though, is our ability to build community. Each of our sessions ends with some form of group work: a chance to talk about goals and dreams. And to commiserate about whatever obstacle has come up in our writing.

We welcome writers of all disciplines at Writers Blok. We get screenwriters, novelists, poets, memoirists, and comedians. Some of our writers are professionals; others are just getting started.

We frequently welcome guest speakers for Q&As about the writing process and their own journeys to the top (or the middle). Past guests include Rob McElhenney, Megan Ganz, Bill Lawrence, and Danny Zuker.

We host two types of sessions: Sprints and Extended Sessions. When you come to a Sprint Session, we'll give you a piece of chalk and have you write a goal for the session on our chalkboard. Then comes 50 minutes of uninterrupted writing, followed by a quick check-in on your goals. Extended Sessions consist of 90 minutes of uninterrupted writing, followed by 30 minutes of small-group breakout sessions featuring talking prompts and chocolate.

Our sessions are held inside our own dedicated space in the Culver City Arts District, hosted by working writers who know the ups and downs and ins and outs of living and writing in Los Angeles.

For first-timers, Sprint Sessions are $5; regular price is $10. Extended Sessions: first-timers: $10; regular price: $15. Unlimited monthly memberships are $60.

We hope you'll come see us soon. We'll be glad to have you.

Words, wine, and Delicious Pizza

Writers Blok Headquarters

Here's how it's going to go down: you're going to bring something to work on and for 90 minutes, that's what you're going to do. You're going to write--inside a dedicated space built for writers by writers, and accompanied by tea, fancy water, snacks, fresh-ground coffee...and wine. When those 90 minutes are up, you're going to report to an assigned group to talk about what you're working on, goals you have, and what's driving you crazy about writing. There will be chocolate. There will be people like you. There will be people UNlike you. And you will get more writing done in one evening than you ever thought possible. Afterward, we'll go to Delicious Pizza (5419 W Adams), where all Writers Blok participants are entitled to 20% off on food AND drink. One trip to Writers Blok costs $20. If it's your first time, it's $10. Writing: it can be lonely. It doesn't have to be.

Meetup Night at Writers Blok (Free!)

Writers Blok Headquarters

Writers Blok exists to help writers find structure, accountability, and each other. You'll bring your own writing to work on for the first 90 minutes of the session. (All genres are welcome.) At 8:30, we'll break the large group into small groups and hand out a discussion prompt that focuses on goal-setting and the writing process. All of this is accompanied by snacks, tea, and coffee roasted at Culver City's own Bar Nine. Oh, and there's chocolate, too. Writers Blok operates on a membership model. This, though, is a FREE chance for FIRST-TIMERS to check out what we do. As such, space is limited to the first six RSVPs (who've never been to Writers Blok). Please note: if you RSVP and are a no-show, you will be removed from this Meetup group. If you've been before and would like to sign up for a monthly membership: writersblok.org/pricing
