I WROTE A STORY: NOW WHAT? with Jane Flett
When: May 10, 10.30am-4.30pm
Are you ready to take your writing to the next level? Do you dream of seeing your words in print, but have no idea how to go about making it happen? If you’ve written a short story or two and are wondering what to do next, this is the workshop for you. On May 10th, Jane Flett will share her experience of sending out stories, offering a crash course in the first steps to becoming a published writer.
In this one-day workshop, we’ll discuss finding a market for your short stories, pitching to an agent, and the world of grants, contests and writing retreats. As well as revealing the wealth of opportunities available for the budding short story author, the workshop will involve practical exercises designed to help you edit and format your stories for submission. We’ll also talk about dealing with rejection and what Roxane Gay calls “the cockroach school of submission”—how a healthy dose of persistence is a vital addition to every writer’s toolkit!
JANE FLETT is a philosopher, cellist, and seamstress of most fetching stories. Her poetry features in Salt’s Best British Poetry 2012 and is available as a chapbook, Quick, to the Hothouse, from dancing girl press. Her fiction—which Tom Robbins described as “among the most exciting things I’ve read since social networking crippled the Language Wheel”—has been commissioned for BBC Radio, awarded the SBT New Writer Award, and performed at the Edinburgh International Book Festival. Jane has been published in numerous journals, including PANK and 3 A.M. Magazine, and is represented by Samar Hammam of Rocking Chair Books.
