Mindfulness for Parents

Details

The Wye River Upper School Speaker Series is pleased to announce a four-part workshop designed to help parents cope with the stress of parenting in a time of covid. The series is free and open to the public, and is offered virtually on Tuesdays in October.

Parenting in the 21st Century was a stressful endeavor even before covid, as we raise our children in the shadow of 9/11, security checks, anthrax attacks, economic meltdowns, decreasing civility, and political division. With the past six months having added to the challenges of helping our children thrive, parents need as many tools as possible to deal with stress in skillful ways. A mindfulness practice can be one of those tools.
Research from Oxford University, UCLA, the University of Massachusetts Medical School, and many other leading universities has shown the efficacy of a mindfulness practice in reducing stress, calming anxiety, reducing depression, and generally allowing more skillful responses to life’s difficulties. Wye River Upper School students are taking the "Mindfulness In Schools Project" course designed for teens this year. Interim Head of School Dave Mullen has studied under Dr. Ron Seigel of the Harvard University Medical School and Stan Eisenstein of the Insight Meditation Community of Washington, and has completed several training programs with Mindful Schools and the Mindfulness in Schools Project.

The parent sessions follow the Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction curriculum taught to all Wye River students with specific focus on the challenges that parents face.
