What we're about

Wy'East Zen Center (also known previously as Sandy Sangha ) is a diverse group of people that share a practice of meditation, discussion and sangha (community). Our purpose is to support each other in exploring Zen practice and Buddhist teachings and how they apply to daily life. Our community meets weekly for a period of silent meditation followed by discussion on a variety of topics related to Zen and mindfulness practice. We share occasional meditation retreats, and we are looking forward to gathering at other times to do mindfulness activities, like mindful hikes, camping, volunteering, knitting, sharing coffee or tea, going to dinner, photography, potlucks, social hikes, art festivals, snowshoeing, and meditation at homes or in the forest, picnics, etc...... We are hoping to to get out and enjoy many activities that we all are interested in, while getting to know each other more deeply, outside of our weekly gatherings. Please consider being an event organizer. The more events we have, the more vibrant our group will be.

We are grounded in the Soto Zen tradition but our practice is open to everyone, regardless of faith or beliefs. No previous experience in meditation is necessary. An introduction to Zen meditation is available and we are happy to help you get started. We are associated with Dharma Rain Zen Center in Portland Oregon.

Please note, this is not an official group covered under our incorporated non-profit status in the State of Oregon. It is a volunteer group, to socialize outside of our Zendo. It may or may not continue, depending on participation. We will get feedback from our steering committee, on the on-going operations of the group.

We are a Soto Zen Buddhist group located in the heart of Sandy. We are affiliated with Dharma Rain Zen Center in Portland. Our transmitted teachers come every other week for Dharma talks and to meet with anyone looking for individual spiritual direction. Although our forms are Zen we welcome everyone from all spiritual traditions. Most of our sangha do not identify as Buddhist, but enjoy our simple meditation practice, reading, Dharma talks and access to our highly skilled and compassionate teachers. We meet every Wednesday evening at Celtic Spirit Yoga. See below for our regular schedule. You are welcome to come only for meditation, Dharma talk, or whatever part of our program answers your needs. Newcomers are warmly welcome - it's a good idea to come 15 minutes early on your first visit for a brief orientation. It is not necessary to RSVP for our regular Wednesday evening meetings. Because of this, it will only reflect 1 attending, but we usually have approx. 8-15 people. Our space can be chilly or warm, depending on season. Feel free to bring a throw or dress accordingly. Shoes are left inside the entry door - socks are fine.
