What we're about

Our mountain ranges are some of the best in the world. We are quite lucky that way. It offers a whole lot of everything; hiking, mountain biking, road biking, downhill skiing, backcountry skiing, and tons more! I have been out hiking, backpacking, cross country skiing, and mountain biking. I love it all and am thirsty for more. I have always wanted to try something different ... kayaking around the Vancouver Island area, mountain biking in Squamish, cross-country skiing in Vernon, portaging in the beautiful Ontario parks, and much more. Unfortunately, my weekdays are jam-packed which makes it hard to play in new places. I know I am not alone when it comes to busy weekdays!

My goal through this meetup is to organize trips around a mix of activities and xplore our local grounds. More importantly, get a break from our busy lives, enjoy the outdoors, and have a ton of fun with fellow xplorers! I'll start with hiking & backpacking for now.

Check out some of our upcoming events and feel free to message me if you have any questions or suggestions!

Thank you for joining & I look forward to meeting you!

Xploring YEG Trails - Long Walk / Hike

Needs a location

Good day Xplorers!

I thought it would be a good idea to connect & get to know each other over long walks. The plan is to try out different trails, head out for at least a couple of hours, followed by coffee / hangout / food. We can do elk island some days, pick a route in the river valley, even try out new terrain! we will change it up ...

What:

  • Hike 2-3 hrs.
  • New hikers should have a small pack, approx 20 lbs.

When:

  • Last Saturdays of every month, regardless of rain / snow (unless it's -30) :).

Where:

  • I will create a monthly schedule, we'll know in advance :)

Carpooling:

  • Please announce your area if you have a car and wouldn't mind picking some people up on the way.
  • $5/person for the car lead. In town hikes.
  • $10/person for the car lead. Out of out hikes.

Notes:

  • Wear comfortable footwear for long walks
  • Bug spray / sun screen / Rain jacket as needed.
  • Fluids / snacks for the day

Hope to see you all!

PS: this will be a pet-friendly hike. Pets must be on a leash at all times.

Big walk in the T-park!

Needs a location

Hi everyone!

We will keep a few locations on each week. It'll allow members to mix things up a bit both locationally (new word!) and memberly (another new word!). Also, this way we can officially be a small group as per our AH guidelines. We will keep a max of 5 members per site.

I am changing up our monthly hike to a weekly hike so more of us can get out there and meet new & fresh faces! The weather is turning out beautiful here.

Sadly, CXX will be here for some time. We will likely see restrictions in place until a whole lot of us get vaccinated and variations are controlled. Masks and social distancing may be around even if they relax restrictions.

So ... don't want to miss out on another summer!

Logistically, to make the weekly hike work, we have to ensure masks are on at all times. As well, we will have to cap the number of hikers to a maximum of 10. Unfortunately, I won't be able to join every week ... but, the week I will be joining I will be sure to RSVP.

A few other logistical bits ...

  1. RSVP: Please only RSVP when you know you will be joining and make sure to update it in case you won't. IRL, this gets a little tricky ... can be hard to "ensure." I was suggested that I institute some sort of an "RSVP-fail-penalty" ... basically, 3 strikes -> earns a banned medal lol. This is not official yet ... let's see how friends play and will take it from there. Unfortunately, with only 5 spots, it's not fair to those who'd like to join.
... Also, RSVP will open 2 days prior to and will close Friday night.

  2. LOCATION: Because of the way Meetup is set up, each repeated event will have the same location. Feel free to chat in the event itself and plan out a new location for the week you like to join.

  3. LEADS: Ideally, there should be a leader for each hike. At least one to suggest a location. I'll let the active group assign one.

  4. TIME: Note that the hike is scheduled for 10 am. The group will leave around 10:10 - 10:15 am.

  5. ACTIVITIES: Feel free to experiment ... maybe try out cycling one day! We have an amazing network of paved trails ... so there won't be a shortage of places to ride! OR even head out to a lake for some sun time and volleyball... hmmm I will come!

  6. OPPORTUNITY: If you love the outdoors and are interested in organizing trips with me, please let me know! I'd LOVE to do different things and would LOVE to hear your fantastic ideas! Just DM me. Btw, this will earn you a REAL medal! I might even sign it! :):)

I think I pretty well-covered everything. I will schedule these out starting this coming Saturday and it's go time! DM me if I missed anything!
