TOPIC: Be Inspired...Bringing Hope and Healing to the Forgotten Poor
Mercy Ships are committed to transforming the lives of the poorest of the poor. People who have lived with devastating ano 30 years! The crew all pay to serve on board. Their donations, together with support from corporationd life-threatening medical conditions for decades find hope and healing – physical and emotional – through the life-saving and life-transforming surgeries Mercy Ships provide free of charge.
Dedicated medical professionals, technical crew, cooks, accountants, cleaners, receptionists, school teachers – and many others – volunteer their time on board our hospital ship, the Africa Mercy, for anything from 2 weeks ts and individuals, keep the ship in developing nations in Africa providing specialised surgeries to those who have no hope of medical assistance in their home countries.
Mercy Ships are also committed to capacity building – training medical professionals to improve medical care in their countries.
This is an inspiring story of how we can all make a difference.
ABOUT OUR GUEST SPEAKER:
Brenda Van Straten was born and grew up in Zimbabwe. Her family moved to South Africa in 1973 where she graduated high school. Before joining Mercy Ships she worked for Safmarine for 12 years. Brenda joined Mercy Ships on board their flag ship, the Anastasis, in July 1996 and served for 10 years in the Discipleship Training School. After the Anastasis was retired, she served on board the Africa Mercy for five years as Advance Team Leader and for two years as Protocol Officer. During this time she also took a sabbatical serving as a volunteer at an orphanage in Hong Kong for one year, did a four year study in Psychology and an online Theology course on designing training programs for adult learners. In June 2014, after serving 18 years on the field, Brenda came back to Cape Town and led two training programs for Youth With A Mission in Muizenberg! In July 2015 she was appointed the position of National Director for Mercy Ships South Africa. She is an inspiring speaker and Mercy Ships has changed many lives. www.MercyShips.co.za
