Ever heard of the UGLY BABY (http://yvrstartups.com/ugly-baby-syndrome-a-common-entrepreneurial-mistake-how-you-can-avoid-it/) problem?
You have an idea, whether it’s a new feature, a new book, a new app or business model and you think it’s going to be big. Because it's your baby, you spent 9 months in “stealth mode” building it up putting in sweat and tears to make version 1.0 of it. You know better to not listen to anyone because these nay sayers are going to suck away your momentum.
When it's time to reveal to the world you wonder why you only have a couple sales... and they're just "pity sales" from friends and family. What happened?
A common mistake entrepreneurs make is the lack of validation (or the "Ugly Baby" problem). They have spent the last 8+ months in their startup cave in "stealth" mode giving birth to their baby, spending countless hours in development whether it's a new app, writing a new book or a new feature. After making a lot of sacrifices and putting in their blood, sweat and tears, then it's time to reveal themselves, wow the world and achieve their dreams.
But there's a problem...
They have an "Ugly Baby" startup and are not aware of it!
They were working on an assumption for the last 8+ months and now have to pivot or maybe go on a soul searching journey. If only they had known earlier.
Validation involves understanding whether your startup/new project has a good market/product fit, whether you are creating something that people want and will sign up for or give you money ($$$). This process is not fun, but can be made easier if you know how.
At YVR Startups, we bring together mentors and peers to form the startup space, to build community and to share wisdom from past wins & losses. Meeting on the 2nd Wednesday of each month, we discuss different topics like getting your first 1000 emails, leadership, marketing, building a team, funding, development and other topics relevant to helping startups bridge the knowledge gap.
What is validation? Why is it important? How to validate a market/product/idea?Should I worry about people stealing my idea? When to pivot and when to press on?
Your investment is only $10 at the door. Refreshments will be served.
