What we're about

Yokoji-Zen Mountain Center is a fully accredited Zen Buddhist Training Center located in the beautiful wilderness of the San Jacinto Mountains of Southern California. Whether you're a new or seasoned meditator, all are welcome to join us and our community for weekly meditation and meditation retreats throughout the year.

Founded in 1982 by Taizan Maezumi Roshi, one of the pioneers of American Zen, Yokoji started life as a summer training center for the Zen Center of Los Angeles. Since 1995, Yokoji has been functioning as a year-round Zen Training Center for residents and non-residents under the direction of the abbot, Tenshin Fletcher Roshi.

Yokoji-Zen Mountain Center is one of the most respected Zen Training Centers in the Western world, regarded so by Japanese and Western teachers alike. Our doors are open to people from all spiritual traditions and walks of life who would like to directly experience, and gain insight into, their true nature. We offer a regular daily practice schedule, introductory courses, silent meditation retreats (sesshin) ranging from 2 to 7 days, and two intensive training periods a year. Since the early 1980s, many of Maezumi Roshi's Dharma successors (those given permission to teach) trained here, including Genpo Roshi, Charlotte Joko Beck and the current abbot, Tenshin Roshi.

Sunday Community Meditation

Yokoji Zen Mountain Center

Come and join us for our regular Sunday practice schedule. This is a great way to meet and practice with our community in a relaxed and supportive atmosphere. Formal members of Yokoji will have the opportunity to meet privately with a teacher and discuss their practice. Coffee and tea are available from 8:30am onwards, and we start at 9:30am with a Zen Buddhist service of chanting and bowing, followed by zazen (meditation) until 11:00am. A short break is followed by a dharma (Buddhist philosophy) talk by Tenshin Roshi or one of his teachers. We finish the day with a delicious vegetarian lunch prepared by the temple cook. If you've never been to Yokoji or practiced Zen before, we recommend attending our Zen Meditation Instruction class, which also starts at 9:30am. This is a great way to learn the basics of zen practice and how you can do it. The class joins the regular schedule at 11:20am for the dharma talk and then lunch. There is a recommended donation of $15.00 for those who wish to take the class.
