What we're about

York Writers’ Group is a place where you can receive constructive feedback on your writing, listen to the writing of others, and meet like minded writers. We welcome all writers of fiction (any genre or format), poetry, drama and autobiography. Whether you are a complete beginner or a published writer, the only requirement is that you treat the other attendees with respect and kindness. We all have to start somewhere!

York Writers' Group is informally affiliated with The Writing Tree ( https://www.meetup.com/York-Creative-Writing-Meetup-Group/) which offers workshops and peer support on all aspects of creative writing. Jenny runs York Writers' Group, and Helen runs The Writing Tree. You can join one, or both, groups, depending on your interest. Please contact Jenny (https://www.meetup.com/members/8011551/) for any questions about York Writers' Group.

How does it work?

Willing participants can share a piece of writing that they have been working on, in order to receive constructive feedback from the group. This is completely voluntary, and you are welcome to just listen/critique if you do not want to read that night. The reading time is up to ten minutes (this is about 2000 words) followed by ten minutes of constructive feedback from the attendees.

Providing hard copies of your piece of writing is voluntary, but it helps tremendously in understanding and critiquing your work if we can actually have it in front of us rather than just hearing it. Please bring enough copies for the group if you can.

Fortnightly critique meeting on Zoom

Needs a location

Until the 'rule of six' is relaxed we will hold our meetings online using Zoom. Zoom details will be sent to attendees on the day of the meeting. We encourage attendees to share their writing via WhatsApp in advance, as it's easier to provide feedback on something we can see as well as hear. To join the WhatsApp group for the event, please send me a message with your mobile number. If you do not have WhatsApp or prefer not to share your number, you can just read your piece aloud (and screen share if that works for you).
