Summer Series: A Darker Shade of Magic (Shades of Magic, #1) by V.E. Schwab
By more than a 2 to 1 vote over all other contenders - the Shades of Magic Series is our Summer read. As in previous summers, we'll read book 1 for June, book 2 for July, and book 3 for August. In August we'll also discuss the series as a whole so if you had to miss June or July you can catch up. (speaking of which - I'll be traveling most of June so need a moderator/host - please comment if you'd be willing to arrive early to secure our tables and or direct questions on these books) A Darker Shade of Magic (Shades of Magic, #1) Kell is one of the last Antari—magicians with a rare, coveted ability to travel between parallel Londons; Red, Grey, White, and, once upon a time, Black. Kell was raised in Arnes—Red London—and officially serves the Maresh Empire as an ambassador, traveling between the frequent bloody regime changes in White London and the court of George III in the dullest of Londons, the one without any magic left to see. Unofficially, Kell is a smuggler, servicing people willing to pay for even the smallest glimpses of a world they'll never see. It's a defiant hobby with dangerous consequences, which Kell is now seeing firsthand. After an exchange goes awry, Kell escapes to Grey London and runs into Delilah Bard, a cut-purse with lofty aspirations. She first robs him, then saves him from a deadly enemy, and finally forces Kell to spirit her to another world for a proper adventure. Now perilous magic is afoot, and treachery lurks at every turn. To save all of the worlds, they'll first need to stay alive. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Meetup details: Arrive early to grab a snack or a drink and visit with the group. We are usually upstairs by the cooking school. Our discussion will start promptly at 7:30 and we'll wrap it up at 9:00. Looking forward to seeing you then. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Now taking nominations for our Fall Reads. I'm going to try to put up the Poll by July so we can select no later than August meeting. I'd love suggestions for a "school setting" for September, Supernatural or Horror for October, Family themes for November, and usually try to end on something uplifting/lighter in December. You can make suggestions on the discussion board ( or email me or leave a comment on this meetup. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Donations are never required to attend this meetup, but gratefully accepted if you would like to help offset the cost of the meetup site. You can donate using paypal on the meetup site, or toss a few bucks in at a meeting if you like.

What we're about

Are you comfortably out of your teens (perhaps by a decade or more) but still love to read YA?
Do you want to meet and discuss YA books with other people like you?

Join us for the new combined YA@Heart / Young at Heart book group. We've merged a local YA book club with the Young Adult for Adults Meetup.

We will typically meet to discuss a YA book on the 2nd Wednesday of every month.

We look forward to sharing our inner teenagers with you.
