Sunday 16th October : 14.00-18.00
I'm planning an interpretation of Zen & Sei Ki which is close to my heart and I now feel ready to offer it for a first time.
This workshop is for people who know that quiet feeling of despair inside...
It can be a very lonely place, keeping up all the smiles for the outside world. It has nothing to do with outer success or difficulty.
One resonance I experienced personally, was with a film called the Shawshank Redemption. I watched the film 20 years ago, and then afterwards, found that, something inside me felt just the same as the lead character imprisoned for life, yet innocent. He dug his way out with a spoon kept hidden in a bible over many years and then made his way to a beach on the Pacific coast of Mexico to repair old boats, where as he says, there are no memories.
It is a really interesting metaphorical story. In my case I ended up standing on a hill top above Guildford in the rain that night, very emotionally upset, and then not wanting to return to my flat, walked through the night to the cathedral which I could see in the distance.
There is an another image that may convey the feeling: of sitting on a stool in the middle of a small room with walls on all sides and no apparent opening to leave through. No way out. No where to go. But there is a way, which is to stop being your lower self and become who you really are... your heart can find a way out.
I will use Zen to help us find our Wisdom and Sei Ki Touch at its deepest level, to draw out our Compassion and open our hearts.
I hope not to talk too much beyond guiding the session activity, and will let our silence and simple shared heart resonance say whatever needs to be said. There will be plenty of Zen sitting, but you can still be comfortable on a cushion or chair.
I will share the Sei Ki within the group first and then we will quietly help each other with it, as this is how we heal ourselves, through giving absolutely everything we have to help another.
I may find some poetry to read, though I'm not sure yet, the right piece will have to come to me.
I have to be clear and honest. This is not a therapy group, we cannot attend hoping for some miracle change, and we are all responsible for ourselves, so if you need or are likely to need emotional support then please ensure you have access to a counsellor with the appropriate background to help you.
What we are doing though, is following a very old tradition. In the end, despair is simply a doorway on to the Zen path. I don't care about religion, but it is still true.
When you experience this, it can either cause great suffering which it generally does, or it can be the opening for a beautiful life journey, and I hope to offer people the opportunity for the latter.
And me, well I'm not some kind of psychology professional, I just know this topic really well, as it was the beginning of my journey 20 years ago and I've been exploring it ever since. It is my life.
