Michael Noll, Technologist, Confluent

Title of the Talk: Stream Processing for Apache Kafka: Kafka Streams and KSQL

Abstract: In this talk we cover the latest state (pun intended) of stream processing with Apache Kafka. Specifically, we take a closer look at Kafka’s Streams API and at KSQL: how they compare and how they can be used together to build event-driven applications that are elastic, scalable, fault-tolerant, and distributed.

Bio: Michael Noll is a technologist in the Office of the CTO at Confluent, the company founded by the creators of Apache Kafka. Before that he was the product manager for stream processing, focussing on Kafka’s Streams API and KSQL, the streaming SQL engine for Kafka. Previously Michael was the technical lead of the Big Data platform of .COM/.NET DNS operator Verisign, where he grew the Hadoop, Kafka, and Storm based infrastructure from zero to petabyte-sized production clusters spanning multiple data centers – one of the largest Big Data infrastructures operated from Europe at the time. He is a known tech blogger in the Big Data community (www.michael-noll.com) and serves as a technical reviewer for publishers such as Manning in his spare time. He also writes at https://cnfl.io/blog-michael-noll. Michael has a Ph.D. in computer science and is an experienced speaker, having presented at international conferences such as ACM SIGIR, ApacheCon, Strata, and Kafka Summit.
