Let's talk ABAWT - ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE IN AFRICA

Details

As the world ushers in the Fourth Industrial Revolution (4IR) – which is characterized by increasingly blurred lines between the digital, biological, and physical worlds – technologists are coming to grips with the opportunities of emerging technologies such as Artificial Intelligence (AI), robotics, and the Internet of Things.

The term ‘Artificial Intelligence’ (AI) was coined by scientist John McCarthy at Dartmouth College in 1956 - an machine enabler to exhibit human-like cognition and unleashes the next wave of digital disruption.

AI presents countless avenues for both the public and private sectors to optimize solutions to the most crucial problems facing the continent today, especially for struggling industries, and is poised to impact Africa in several ways. It has been hailed by many as a transformative force for African societies, promising to reduce inequality, alleviate poverty, and improve access to public services like health and education. But deployment of these powerful technologies is still in a fledgling phase on the continent, and there are significant challenges to overcome in building capacity to fully harness their potential.

The investment landscape already shows the massive opportunity behind the two letters. A study by PwC found that AI could increase global GDP by 14% (approx $115.7 trillion) making it the biggest commercial opportunity in the global economy.

But how is Africa going to gain a slice of this lucrative Artificial Intelligence pie and will 2020 be a Tipping Point for African AI ? Will AI offer similar benefits as mobile tech did for Africa where communication capabilities dramatically increased while leapfrogging the need for old-fashioned infrastructure?

With our upcoming talk, we will shed light on Artificial Intelligence in Africa and try to find answers to our questions.
