Discover Roman Londinium

Details

For our very first Walk in the Past through the Story of London we are going back in time to the earliest days of the city with a visit to Roman Londinium.

Julius Caesar came to Britain twice, but it was another hundred years before the Roman invasion proper took place. In AD 43 Emperor Claudius sent 45,000 men to conquer this little island and create the province of Britannia.

Our walk will follow the line of the Roman city walls, where there are some splendid archaeological remains. We will discover the locations of Roman buildings such as the Basilica/Forum and infantry fortress, amphitheatre and recently restored Temple of Mithras.

On route we will discuss the invasion of AD 43, the growth of Roman London, destruction of the city by Queen Boudicca and its resurrection as capital of Britannia, as well as the final days of Londinium.

We will finish at the Museum of London where there is a fine gallery dedicated to the Roman period with many informative displays and artefacts. There will be time to visit the museum if you wish before it closes for the day.

A full set of Steve’s research notes for this walk will be emailed out to walkers after the event.

At the end of this walk donations will be collected to support the running of A Walk in the Past (London)
