SUNDAY WALK: Ebbor Gorge and Priddy: Ice Age Origins and a Medieval Sheep Fair

Details
Payment is in advance for this tour. Once you have booked your place on Meet Up, Steve will be in touch about paying the walk fee to secure your place.
Thirty thousand years ago early modern humans arrived in Britain and one of the first places they headed for was the spectacular Mendip Hills just south of Bristol.
The Ice Age sites contained within this Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty are of national and international importance.
Join us on a five mile walk through the beautiful wooded valleys to the west of the City of Wells.
We will explore the limestone gorge of Ebbor and hear about its formation during the many waves of the Ice Age. We will see the rock shelters where our ancient ancestors rested on seasonal hunting expeditions and processed animal hides to make their clothes.
In the village of Priddy we will hear of the annual Sheep Fair that has run every August for over six hundred years as well as the much more recent Folk Festival.
Priddy is also home to the splendid Queen Victoria Inn where we will pause for refreshments.
There are parts of this walk that involve strenuous scrambling up steep rocky slopes. If you are a moderately experienced walker and reasonably agile you will be fine with this level of walking. Please message Steve if you have any concerns.
A set of written notes will be emailed out to walkers after our walk. This will allow you to hold on to what you have picked up from our exploration of the breath taking Mendip Hills.
If you would like to lift share from Bath or Bristol for this event please use the comment board below to facilitate this.
A Walk in the Past is a friendly group where regulars and newcomers are always welcome. Our aim is to combine a good walk with pleasant company in historic landscapes.
